If you feel tired almost daily no matter how many hours of sleep you get, chances are you may be suffering from a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is one of the more common causes of these lingering feelings of sleepiness because it causes you to wake up periodically during the night and disrupts your sleep cycle. However, hypopnea syndrome is also quite common but is a less severe form this problem.

Some Background

Both types of sleep disorders involve an obstruction of the main air passageway. Because the tube is compliant, it can easily become obstructed and can cause a reduction in airflow. This doesn’t happen when we’re awake but during sleep it can occur because we are in a position that makes it more likely.

When the obstruction blocks off all airflow, this causes sleep apnea. You wake up because you stop breathing for a moment. This can happen dozens or hundreds of times per night. With hypopnea syndrome, however, the obstruction is not complete but does reduce the amount of airflow. If the reduction is not too great, sleep disturbances may not be too numerous. As the reduction increases, the problem worsens and your qualify of life begins to suffer.

Causes of Hypopnea

Like sleep apnea, no one cause seems to be linked to this sleep problem. Researchers do believe anatomic issues may play a very important factor in determining who is at greatest risk. For example, having enlarged tonsils or unusual placement of the jaw bone can make it more likely for your airway to be restricted while sleeping.

Other evidence suggests that obesity, smoking, age, and existing respiratory problems are also likely causes for both hypopnea and sleep apnea.

Symptoms of these Sleep Disorders

The number of people suffering from these conditions in the United States is hard to pinpoint because many of the cases are not diagnosed. Estimates suggest that 80% of cases in the United States have not been diagnosed. Statistics suggest up to 25% of men between the age of 30 and 60 and up to 9% of women in the same age group suffer from hypopnea.

The condition does cause a number of symptoms. The most obvious is the feeling of tiredness that people can’t seem to shake throughout the day. No matter how much they sleep at night they may still wake up feeling exhausted because their bodies have not been able to complete sleep cycles thanks to the interruptions in breathing.

Hypopnea also causes people to be more irritable (thanks to the sleepiness) and to have headaches because of the reduced airflow to the brain. Periods of loud snoring which are followed by silence for several seconds is also a common symptom of the disorder which you may not notice yourself but which might be recognized by your partner.

The Need for Treatment

Although hypopnea is not as severe as sleep apnea, treatment is needed to prevent the condition from getting worse and leading to complications. High correlations have been noted between these types of sleep disorders and increased risks for strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular problems. Receiving the proper treatment has been shown to increase mortality rates by 95% over the course of five years.

If you suffer from sleeping disorders, you already know that getting a restful night of sleep is a challenge. Thankfully, there are some methods that can help you find more peace and relaxation when it’s time to go to bed.

Using Exercise

One of the most common sleep disorder treatments is prescription strength sleeping pills. However, these pills can have serious side effects and, like any drug, can become addictive. Before you resort to medication, try adding some healthy exercises to your routine to see if they can have a positive effect on your sleeping habits.

Research has shown that people suffering from insomnia generally are less active than people without this condition. Sleep apnea, one of the most common and potentially dangerous sleeping disorders, can be caused by obesity so getting more exercise can also help reduce that problem.

Beyond that, however, healthy exercises have consistently been shown to help patients improve their ability to get a good night’s sleep, especially when they follow certain guidelines. For example, to improve your sleep you should do your exercises in the late afternoon or early evening. This gives your body a chance to relax and to slow back down from the workout. Don’t exercise right before going to bed. It won’t help.

Also, make sure the exercise you choose involves your leg muscles. Science suggests that when you exert these muscle groups, chemicals that act like sedatives are released into your body which can help you begin winding down and preparing for bed. These exercises could include walking, running, bicycling, swimming, walking on a treadmill, doing stair climbing, and other types of aerobic routines.

Relaxing Your Mind

If you have sleep disorders, relaxing your body might not be the only problem. Your mind may also need to unwind before you get some sleep. Healthy exercises can help here, too, but you want to use a different formula.

Before going to bed, engage in some type of non-aerobic exercise. Yoga is a great example because it was designed to help reduce stress and to calm the mind. Another option is a leisurely walk outside while practicing deep breathing and/or mindful meditation in which you focus your entire mind on each step you take or on the feeling of the breeze against your skin. This focus keeps all of the other thoughts normally running through your mind at bay.

Climb into bed after completing your exercise. Turn off all the lights. If you need some kind of sound in the room, use relaxing music on a low volume but always turn the television off. You want to keep distractions to a minimum.

Bringing in Additional Tools

In some cases, sleep apnea and snoring can be sleeping disorders that cause you to not get a restful night’s sleep. The problems stem from a blockage of the air passageways so you have to breathe louder (snoring) or you stop breathing (apnea). You can sometimes use a sleep apnea pillow to reduce this problem because it is designed to keep your neck in the best position for open airways. If you’ve tried everything else, this might be a good idea to try before resorting to prescription sleep disorder treatments.

Sleep apnea is a common condition that many people have to deal with. In many cases the sleep apnea is mild and requires no intervention. There are many sleep apnea causes and many sleep apnea remedies to help you or your doctor make a sleep apnea diagnosis. In severe cases it is best to consult your health care provider as sleep apnea can be very dangerous, and in some cases deadly.

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the person has periods of interrupted breathing while asleep. The person often has an obstructed airway that causes these periods of not breathing. There are many other causes of sleep apnea. Some of these causes cannot be helped, but there are some causes of sleep apnea that can helped by certain sleep apnea remedies. Without surgery however, there are no sleep apnea cures per say. There are sleep apnea remedies that can alleviate the symptoms of the disorder.

Before a sleep apnea diagnosis can be made there are some home sleep apnea remedies you should try first. People with sleep apnea should sleep on their sides instead of their backs. This puts less pressure on the airway and may help the person be able to breathe better while asleep. Another thing to try at home is to go to bed at the same time every night. Studies have shown that a consistent bed time and sleeping pattern helps alleviate the symptoms in some sufferers. Another one of the causes of sleep apnea is cigarette smoking. Along with a multitude of detrimental effects, smoking makes overall breathing more difficult and this can be manifested in sleep apnea.

If these home remedies do not work then it is time to see your health care professional so they can make an official sleep apnea diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made, your doctor will try many treatments for a sleep apnea cure. He will suggest that you try all the remedies that you can do at home. Then he may order a sleep study so he or she can get a first hand look at how you sleep. If he or she determines that the problem is severe they may have you try some devices to help keep your airway open during sleep. One of these devices is called a nose strip. They are easy to use; they are just adhesive strips that keep the nose open to promote better breathing. The next step is to send you home with what is called a CPAP machine. This device sends light air pressure to the airway to keep it open. While cumbersome and difficult to get used to but in most cases can be a so called sleep apnea cure.

If none of these remedies work, as a last resort your doctor will evaluate the need for surgery to keep your airway open and allow you to breathe during sleep. This is an extreme step but for some it is the only thing left to give them relief.

Be sure to check with your doctor to see if you have sleep apnea. If you just suffer from sleepless nights, there are some natural supplements that can help.

In today’s hustle and bustle society, most of us could use a better sleep. Either we aren’t getting enough or what we are getting isn’t fulfilling our rest and relaxation needs. If you’re one of the millions of people who need a better night’s sleep, there are a few strategies that can help, including taking some types of nutrients.

Nutrients to Take as Sleep Aids

Remember how people were always trying to give warm milk to someone who couldn’t sleep on television? Well, that advice might not be far off the mark. When you drink or eat a natural source of calcium, such as milk, it can create a sedative effect on the body. That means a glass of milk can really help you drift off to sleep at night. Additionally, you should consider adding some magnesium-rich foods to your diet. If you’re taking in about 1,000 mg a day you should find yourself sleeping better at night. Good sources of magnesium include cashews, wheat bran, and kelp. Supplements might be an even better choice.

Vitamins to Take as Sleep Aids

The family of B vitamins can be some of the best choices if you have nervousness problems, especially at night. Concentrate the most on your intake of B6 and B12 vitamins because these are known to prevent and/or treat cases of insomnia. If you’re not getting enough in your diet, you might have a hard time falling asleep at night so make sure you take at least 100 mg of B6, 25 mg of B12, and 100 mg B5 (this vitamin can help reduce stress which can also lead to insomnia and sleeplessness).

Supplements to Take as Sleep Aids

One of the main helpers in your effort to fall asleep every night is serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. If your brain isn’t producing enough serotonin, you may have a difficult time falling asleep. Tryptophan is an amino acid are bodies use to create serotonin so this can be one way of increasing your likelihood of drifting off. While supplements of tryptophan are no longer available, you can increase the amount of this amino acid in your diet by drinking milk and eating turkey.

If you’d prefer to get these benefits through supplements, one possibility is known as 5-HTP. In clinical studies, the supplement has been proven effective at treating insomnia and in increasing REM sleep by 25%.

Other Ideas for Better Sleep

While adding supplements to your diet is a good idea, you can also take other steps to get better sleep. For example, you can stop drinking alcohol, using caffeine, and smoking. All of these activities are known to inhibit your body’s ability to get a good night’s sleep. Avoiding eating before going to bed and increasing your amount of physical activity during the day are both good ideas, too.

If you still have trouble sleeping, work on reducing your stress, going to bed at the same time every night, and investing in a comfortable mattress. Making these changes can help you get better sleep.

If you’re having trouble getting a sufficient, good amount of sleep there are many natural supplements and nutrients that can help. Check out products like Melatonin 3mg and Sweet Sleep can help you rest the proper amount so your body works the way its intended to.

The average adult needs at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep daily. Most of us would love to get that much sleep and are lucky to get 6 hours, with or without interruptions. Getting a good night’s sleep has become a huge industry with people paying thousands of dollars for the perfect mattress and filling prescriptions on a regular basis for sleeping pills. But you don’t have to spend that type of money or risk becoming addicted to sleeping pills in order to get the rest you need. Sometimes, all you have to do is change your diet.

Research and anecdotal findings have shown a connection between certain types of nutrients and chemicals found in foods that can actually improve your sleep habits. The good news is that most of them are easy to add to your diet, too. Listed below are a few of the findings:

Tryptophan

If you want to try out one of nature’s sedatives, tryptophan is the best choice. This amino acid can already be found in your body because it is a necessary ingredient in the creation of serotonin, a neurotransmitter found in the brain which causes us to feel peaceful and sleepy. Interestingly, you’ll find tryptophan in foods that are rich in animal protein, such as turkey. Ever wonder why everyone felt so drowsy after a big Thanksgiving meal? The answer is tryptophan. However, if you want to make
sure that tryptophan gets to your brain, combine it with a food high in carbohydrates.

Some good foods sources of tryptophan include chicken, fish, and turkey, as well as milk and dairy products. Combine these with a carbohydrate, such as bread, crackers, or fruit to improve your night time sleep. There is always the warm glass of milk before bed, that many generations have claimed as the trick for a good nights sleep.

Valerian

If you’re looking for an herb that might be able to improve your sleep at night, consider valerian. This herb has been recognized as a sedative for centuries and is now becoming more widely available as a dietary supplement. Like tryptophan, valerian seems to aid in the process of sleep by working with one of the neurotransmitters in our brains (GABA) which help increase relaxation and sleepiness. Taking between 400 to 900 milligrams daily or brewing a tea made from dried valerian, a few hours before bedtime, has helped many people sleep better.

While valerian can be helpful, the herb does have some potential side effects, such as dizziness and headaches. Do not combine valerian with any other type of sedatives, prescription or over the counter types, and you may want to discuss the herb with your doctor before you consider taking it if you have any chronic medical conditions.

Melatonin

Known affectionately as the sleep hormone, melatonin has received a lot of attention in recent years for its effects on our nighttime habits. In fact, one of the reasons we have more trouble sleeping well as we get older is due to the reduction of me latonin in our bodies as we age. Melatonin controls our body’s internal time clock. It acts like an alarm clock telling us when to go to sleep and when to wake up. While the research on the effectiveness of increasing our intake of melatonin is mixed, trying it out for a month or two, might be useful for you. The best form of melatonin that will help you fall asleep quickly, is the fast release form and to help you stay asleep is the sustained release form. Daily intake of melatonin should be 3 milligrams a day or less based on your doctorТs recommendation. The reported side effects of melatonin have been nausea, headache and dizziness. If the effects are too uncomfortable or youТre not seeing results in a couple of weeks, stop taking the melatonin.

These are just three of the herbs or nutrients that can help improve your sleep. Combining these with a balanced diet, restricted consumption of caffeine and alcohol prior to bedtime, and regular exercise will help bring about better sleep.

We have all experienced one of those nights when we just tossed and turned without sleeping well. Possible reasons could be we couldn’t turn off the thoughts running through our heads, maybe we were anxious or excited about something that was going to happen the next day, or we’d had too much caffeine before going to bed. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who has had only one or two incidents of sleeplessness among many good nights of rest. However, for millions of Americans, those nights of restlessness and sleeplessness are a repeat occurrence. When not being able to sleep becomes so common that it begins to interfere with your daily routine, you could be suffering from insomnia. Unfortunately, many people do not realize that insomnia can cause some serious, even dangerous side effects.

Driving Safety

While you may believe insomnia only impacts your life, this disorder can also impact the lives of others. Car accidents are one good example. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, more than 100,000 automobile crashes are caused by drivers falling asleep every year. Of crashes researched in 2002, more than 70,000 injuries and 1,500 deaths were reported. More than half of those crashes involved people under the age of thirty. This age group seems to suffer from insomnia and chronic sleeplessness more frequently than others.

Depression

Although it was once believed that insomnia was sometimes caused by depression, some researchers now suspect that a chronic inability to get a good night’s sleep could be a factor in the development of depression. What sleep researchers and others in the field have discovered is that when you cannot sleep, you suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including the following:

• Ongoing fatigue
• Increased irritability
• Problems with concentration
• Decreased memory function
• Withdrawal from social activities
• Reduced interest in sex
• Rapid and unexplained weight loss
• Reduced ability to deal with stress
• Increased emotional sensitivity
• Increased feelings of being helpless or “out of control”
• Increased negativity and pessimism

Over an extended period of time, these symptoms can turn into full-blown depression. Unfortunately, many attempts to deal with insomnia, at this point, are useless and only exacerbate the problem.

Career Problems

While insomnia can severely impact your mental health, it can also interfere with your professional life. Whether you are a student, athlete, or a full-time employee, you are likely to see negative effects of chronic sleep loss impacting your ability to perform. In the work field, for example, in one study of insomniacs, the absentee rate was 10 times higher for sufferers than for control groups. High levels of absenteeism not only put your job at risk but can also affect your weekly paycheck, making advancement difficult or impossible. If you are a student, you may be concerned about concentration and memory problems associated with even mild levels of insomnia. If you can’t focus on schoolwork or remember what your professors say during lectures, you’re not going to succeed in school. Ultimately, your future success factors would remain greatly at risk if proper amounts of quality sleep are not obtained.

Emotional Reactions

Research published back in 2007, has also indicated that a serious lack of sleep could cause people to have overly intense emotional reactions to negative events and experiences in their lives. What researchers found is that sleep is important to us because it helps replenish the circuits in our brain that control emotional responses. When we don’t get enough sleep, these circuits are not properly replenished and this can cause serious emotional instability. The emotional centers of sleep deprived subject’s brains were 60% more active than those same areas in the brains of the control group who slept normally.

Sleep, the precious hours when our bodies relax, heal and regenerate, are some of the best moments of our day even though we aren’t awake to fully appreciate them. However, too many of us aren’t getting enough sleep and that can have a serious impact on our health and our well-being. But how much sleep is enough? That answer lies in learning more about the different stages of sleep that you go through in a single night.

The Five Stages

While we tend to think of sleep as a single step process in which we are either asleep or awake, research now knows that is not the case. This realization is much more recent than you may have imagined. In fact, up until the early 1950’s, scientists thought that brain activity dropped to nearly zero while we slept. Only after the implementation of new equipment was that idea changed, and researchers were able to capture patients in REM sleep (the final stage). Today, five separate stages of sleep are recognized.

In the first stage, which lasts five to ten minutes, you will be drowsy, and your eyes may move sluggishly back and forth under closed eyelids. You can be awakened easily at this point. Interestingly, if you’ve ever had the feeling of falling while you were sleeping, it was most likely during this first stage, as your brain interprets muscle contractions this way and at this point in the sleep cycle.

Gradually, you will move into the second stage of light sleep. This stage is marked by slower brain waves, eye movements stop, body temperature will change, and your heart rate will slow down.

Next, you will enter the third and fourth stages of sleep. Both of these stages are known as deep sleep. The brain is not as active during these stages as the blood flow is directed toward regenerating the body, healing tissues and regenerating energy stores for physical activity. Waking someone up at this point of the sleep cycle is extremely difficult and the person may be confused or disoriented. Many common sleep disorders, such as sleepwalking or bed wetting, occur during these two stages of sleep.

Finally, you will enter the fifth stage known as rapid eye movement or REM. The REM stage means that your sleep duration has lasted for approximately 70 to 90 minutes. It is not uncommon for there to be 3 to 5 episodes of this stage of sleep occuring throughout the night. At this point, there is a dramatic increase in brain wave activity. However, the muscles in your legs and arms don’t move, this is known as sleep paralysis, but it is only for a short time. There is also an increase in the heart rate and blood pressure as well as your breathing becomes rapid, but not deep. During this stage that you start dreaming, and if you are awakened at this stage you can remember those dreams.

These stages are not completed just once during a given period of sleep. In fact, the entire cycle is completed in less than two hours. During each cycle you complete, you go into a deeper sleep during stages three and four and the REM stage becomes longer.

The Importance of the Sleep Stages

Although all of the stages are important, the most important parts of the cycle are the deep sleep periods and the REM sleep. If you have disruptions to your deep sleep – stages three and four – you are going to feel more tired in the morning when you wake up. Impaired sleep during stages three and four means that your body has not been given adequate time to repair and ready itself for the next day. The importance of REM sleep is this is when the body deals with the emotional, memory and stress processing. Having good REM sleep at night has been shown to improve a person’s outlook during the day therefore, having less REM sleep can cause a bad mood. Ensuring that you have plenty of peace and quiet for these stages is important.

If you are still feeling tired in the morning, try getting a few extra hours, here and there, especially if you are sleep deprived. However, to meet the requirements for sleep consistently, you need to set the stage for good sleep on a regular routine. There are specific ways to help determine a regular routine such as: improve your daytime habits, make your bedroom environment inviting for relaxation and sleep, avoid food and drink (especially caffeine) that might impair with sleep, avoid alcohol and some medications, and keep a routine and try to go to bed at the same time each night.

Sleep research has resulted in some interesting findings, including those concerning your body and its’ metabolism. Sleep is absolutely necessary, and while you sleep your body repairs and rejuvenates itself, so that when you awake you are fully rested and ready to face another day. Sleep research has shown that Americans are routinely sleep deprived and it is no wonder with the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Always seeming to be on the go, with never enough time in the day, you may be sorely tempted to cut back on sleep because of this lack of time. Be careful, this can be a big mistake. Not getting enough sleep can impair your reactions, judgment, and performance in all areas of your lifestyle.

Quantity of sleep is vitally important, therefore, children and teenagers who are still growing should get between 8 1/2 to 10 hours of sleep each and every night. Research into the sleep needs and habits of teens, also shows that teens generally fall asleep at a later hour of the night and naturally want to sleep later into the morning. As a result of this research, many school boards and educators are rethinking many high schools’ schedules with double shifts, to start first every morning and get out first every afternoon. The argument to this early scheduling is that a later scheduled shift start and dismissal time will enable teenagers to get a better quality and quantity of sleep.

As mentioned before, when you sleep, your body restores energy, repairs injuries, builds new tissues like muscles, releases hormones into your body, and prepares your body for another long day of work, school, play, and exposure to many different factors. Sleep also plays a significant role in your body’s metabolism. With research into the benefits of sleeping, studies show that not getting enough rest will actually lower your metabolism substantially, which can result in a weight gain. There have been many sleep research studies conducted over the years by doctors, scientists, and nutritionists, that have offered valuable insight into the multi-faceted subject of sleep. You may not realize it, but you can take a little nap, only lasting seconds, without ever closing your eyes or appearing asleep at all. Many times people will witness this happening in another person as that person goes into a kind of “stare” or “asleep” mode and not blink their eyes or speak for a short time. A severe lack of adequate quantity and quality of sleep can result in sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is when the function of sleep, a physiological loss of consciousness with reduced cerebral function and almost absent voluntary physical activity, is absent. Sleep deprivation can cause many problems including paranoia, seeing things that are not there, hearing sounds and voices that do not exist, lapses and lags in concentration and memory, blurred vision, the slurring of words, and more. The longer you go without sleep, the worse the symptoms become. If you lay down to go to sleep and you drop right off, this can be a sign that you are not getting enough sleep and are exhausted. There are numerous disasters and accidents that occur each year in the United States that are a result of sleep deprivation, and for example, some businesses have been involved in lawsuits because an employee was sleep deprived after working long hours and fell asleep while driving and caused an accident.

Even though getting plenty of sleep is important, research has shown that using sleeping pills and drugs to help you doze is not the best answer. Drugs, as a rule, slow your metabolism and can cause problems with your sleep cycle if taken for any extended length of time. This can also be problematic when you stop taking them. Some sleeping medications may be addictive, causing you to become dependent on them to sleep which takes away from your body’s ability to fall asleep on its own. Research has also shown that a healthy and active lifestyle is important to a good night’s rest. If you do not get enough exercise or do any physical activity all day long, and assuming that you are not sick or suffering from a medical condition which tires you out, then you may find it hard to go to sleep at night because your body is still rested and has not had enough physical exertion. Research indicates that you should get moving and be as active as possible, so that your body naturally feels the need for physical rest and repair, in turn helping you get right to sleep and staying that way all night long. This will increase your metabolism, helping your body burn more fat, and work much more efficiently.

If you have severe problems where you stop breathing during sleep, Sleep Apnea, or you fall asleep uncontrollably, Narcolepsy, consult with your doctor to help you in the proper treatment right away.

The causes of insomnia can be wide and varied, depending on your specific condition and the reasons behind why you cannot get to sleep and stay that way. Almost everyone has experienced a sleepless night, but if you start experiencing trouble while trying to get to sleep, or problems with waking after you fall asleep, then you may be suffering from insomnia. Some people are more disposed to suffer from this condition than others, and the specific causes for this are not yet fully discovered. It may be genetic, or it may simply be a learned behavior. Stress can play a big part in insomnia. It is reported that stressful conditions are major causes of insomnia among business executives and others having jobs that include a high level of stress. However, stress does not have to always be a result of your job, many other daily factors can cause stress as well. If you are under a lot of stress from family situations or not getting along with friends, for example, it is not an unusual occurance that you may end up laying in bed at night worrying about things. Unfortunately, this can stimulate you instead of relaxing you and allowing you to fall asleep quickly.

Some factors that result from your lifestyle habits can also promote insomnia. If you use stimulants of any kind, you may experience a difficult time dozing off or staying asleep. Many perscription medicines have side affects that warn you of insomnia. Drinking coffee, tea, or other drinks containing caffeine, too close to your bedtime, you may have a hard time falling asleep and even find yourself waking up in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to a good solid level of sleep. Alcohol is another drink that is a factor in insomnia. Many people reason that a beer or glass of wine will help relax them and therefore they will get to sleep faster and easier. This is not a true. Alcohol will interfere with the natural sleep patterns of your body, and can often cause insomnia to occur during the middle of the night.

If you work at odd hours, or your designated sleep times are interrupted and/or not used for sleep activity, problems arise because your body is not on a schedule and your biorhythms may become out of synchronization. Your body can end up confused and not sure when to sleep and when to wake. In order to avoid insomnia, even if you work night shifts, try to keep your body on a regular schedule of sleep and wakefulness. This will make it easier for your body to establish when it is time to go to bed, and eliminate most insomnia.

Insomnia can also be caused by disturbances in the environmental factors around your sleeping area. Noise from road traffic outside your window, an airport nearby creating significant noise, leaving the television or radio on when you sleep, all of these things may disturb your sleeping even if you do not realize it, or you wake up from these sounds. Lights shining on you while sleeping can also induce insomnia and other sleep problems. When bright lights are detected, your body may be tricked into thinking it is daytime, preventing you from reaching the restorative deep sleep needed to wake feeling energetic and refreshed.

Insomnia may be caused by underlying medical conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, breathing disorders like sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome, where your legs are restless and jerky and even painful all night long while you sleep. All of these can prevent you from getting a full and healthy sleep.

Persistent or chronic pain can also instigate insomnia. Pain may prevent you from going to sleep, or from staying asleep once you get there. If the pain becomes too severe, it may disrupt your sleep patterns and wake you during the night. As a result, that lack of sleep can actually worsen the pain because you body is weakened and disoriented and pain is felt more during this state. With more pain, sleep is postponed and a viscious cycle may be set in motion.

Your body needs to have proper sleep levels to remain in optimal health both physically and mentally. This consists of going from being fully awake to the level of sleep where rapid eye movement or REM can occur and also where dreams are experienced. Without dreams, experts state that a level of mental incapacity can occur and manifest itself in many ways even reaching as far as insanity. You also must be able to reach a deep unconscious level of sleep for the body to repair itself every night.

No matter what the causes of persistant insomnia are, if you are starting to experience any of these symptoms or conditions, and are losing quality sleep, seek out the advice of your doctor or a sleep specialist to recieve the information and help needed to get back on a regular sleep cycle that will bring you back the sleep of your dreams.
