Vitamin C and Immune System

The body needs a certain amount of Vitamin C as well as other minerals and vitamins. Most of us should get these vitamins from the fruits and vegetables that we eat.     So if increased vitamin C doses just gets flushed through the body, then what is the point? Am I wasting my time and money on vitamin C supplements? I hear of various recommended doses, but what really is the optimal daily dose?
