False: Some synthetic hormones can be expensive but bio-identical hormones are actually reasonably priced. Some insurance companies even cover hormone replacement therapy. Most therapies can cost just a co-pay while some require prescriptions that cost 30-60 dollars a month. Considering how HRT can improve your health and quality of life it is well worth the investment.
5) HRT is Only for Older Adults
False: While most people on hormone replacement therapy are in their 50s and 60s, there are many people in their 30’s and 40s that need it. This is especially true for men. Some men experience rapidly declining testosterone levels at a young age. Bottom line is that HRT is appropriate for anyone who has a serious hormone deficiency. A simple blood test is all you need to ensure that you are hormone levels are optimal.
6) Hormone Levels are Definitive
Every person is different and what is optimal for you may not be optimal for me. Doctors take into account how you look and feel just as more (sometime more) than what the lab results say. Hormone ranges are often outdated and what is normal on a piece of paper may not correlate to how you actually feel. When in doubt, always discuss HRT with your physician.
Science and research are constantly progressing. What is acceptable today becomes outdated tomorrow. We are always skeptical of new advances but we should learn to embrace the benefits of developing fields like hormone replacement therapy.
