What Are the Most Dangerous Types of Bacterial Infections?

There are a plethora of types of bacterial infections such as bacterial infections vaginal and bacterial skin infections, but the most dangerous types of bacterial infections have to be the ones that are or are becoming resistant to antibiotics.

Types Of Bacterial Infections

Why are resistant bacterial infections on the rise anyways? There are two main reasons that are closely related. One of the reasons is mutation, evolvement and adaptation of bacteria that happen faster than other species. Their life spans are short and because of this they are able to make the evolutionary changes necessary to resist antibiotics. For example, the types of bacterial infections that are resistant to penicillin alter the structure of their cell membrane so penicillin (which works by going into the cell membrane and destroying the bacteria) is rendered useless. Another reason that more resistant types of bacterial infections are showing up is overusing of antibacterial products. We have hand sanitizers and antibacterial soap and in addition, doctors tend to over prescribe antibiotics instead of allowing our bodies to fight off the infection naturally. While antibiotics are useful, our bodies do have natural defense mechanisms against most bacterial infections and the use of antibiotics is not always necessary.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that is responsible for the most common types of bacterial infection. It is often contracted in hospitals and has been in the news lately as becoming one of the most antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, called MRSA.

In order to fix this problem we need to create better and more efficient antibiotics, learn more about infection control and prescribe antibiotics only when necessary to avoid rapid mutation of common bacteria.
