Top 10 Causes of Itchy Skin

Last year we discussed numerous causes of skin itching and itchy red rashes. We have updated our list to illustrate some new as well as old causes for that itchy red rash you are dying to cure.

1.Genetics

Believe it or not, genetics is the number one cause for itchy skin. Your skin’s collagen levels are determined by genetics and the greater of amount of collagen in your skin the more likely you are to be predisposed to an itchy red rash.

2.Liver Disease

We don’t mean to scare you but it is true that liver disease is a major cause of skin irritation. Usually liver disease will cause your whole body to itch rather than just one specific area. If you find your whole body itching without rashes you may want to consult a doctor to rule out liver disease as well as other internal diseases they may be the cause.

3.Allergic Reaction

Certain fabric fibers, such as wool, and chemicals that can be found in soaps can be a major cause of itchiness and skin irritation. Furthermore, food allergies can cause itchiness in many people. A doctor can test for various food allergies and switching from fragrant soaps to all natural ones can help solve your skin rash and rid the itchiness.

4.Pregnancy

Pregnant women often experience itchy skin, especially on their abdomen and breasts. This is usually a result of hormonal changes in your body.

5.Drugs
Many people experience reactions to a variety of drugs from antibiotics to narcotics. Make sure you are aware if you are allergic to any drugs. After all, every doctor will ask you when you go for a routine checkup

6.Stress

Stress, it seems like it the culprit so many disorders. Unfortunately, it is 100% true. Stress can cause itchiness psychologically adding more credence to the mind body connection. Usually itchiness from stress increases and decreases in conjunction with the level of stress you are experiencing in your everyday life.

7.Dry Skin

This may seem like the most obvious cause of itchy red skin. As your skin dries it begins to itch, plain and simple. Regularly moisturizing your skin is the best way to combat dry skin, especially during those cold winter months.

8.Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Jock itch, vaginal itch and anal itch can all be signs that you have a sexually transmitted disease. Most common is a vaginal itch from yeast infections but nonetheless if you experience persistent itchiness in any of these areas definitely consult a physician.

9.Illness

Rashes and itching from chickenpox and measles are usually the most identifiable since they have a unique rash. They are also usually accompanied by a fever and other signs of illness. Just like STDs and serious allergic reactions, you definitely want to consult a doctor.

10.Insect Bites

Whether spiders, mosquitoes or many other insects, insect bites are easily noticeable and often are accompanied by itching. Many anti-itch creams do a great job quelling the itch until the bite goes away.

    I'm pregnant, and as you've mentioned, this itchy skin is one of the symptoms. I guess it just goes along with other hormonal changes. Are there any treatment for itching designed specifically for pregnant women?
