It might seem a little obvious to say that eating fast food may cause you to gain body fat, but with the variety of food available at fast food outlets, is that statement still true? Research has shown that eating a lot of fast food will increase your body fat and will make you more likely to contract conditions associated with obesity such as diabetes.

The results of a study published in a medical journal called The Lancet, concluded that subjects taking part in the research who ate fast food often gained 10 pounds more in body weight than the subjects who ate fast food less frequently. Also, those who ate fast food regularly were found to be more susceptible to contracting an insulin disorder which is linked to diabetes.

The content of fast foods often called “fast fat foods” is often of a poor nutritional quality. A US based research study charted the health of 3,000 young people over 15 years. In particular, the study concentrated on cardiac health and collated data about the participants’ diet, and exercise habits as well as other lifestyle factors. The scientists then used the information to isolate the effects of fast food on those in the study who went to a fast food restaurant twice a week or more, when compared against those who had fast food once a week. Over the course of the period of research, those who ate fast food at least twice a week gained on average 10 more pounds than those who indulged only once a week. Those who ate fast food more regularly were also found to be more likely to develop insulin resistance which is associated with Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity.

The research concluded that regularly consuming fast food cannot be part of a healthier lifestyle and diet. Fast food meals tend to be rich in calories, refined food, salt and sugar which accounts for the strong link to obesity. Fast food portions also tend to be large, and because of the refined nature of the calorific content, people can eat a large amount without feeling full. This means they get hungry quickly, and may continue to eat more fast food creating an unhealthy dietary cycle.

Some chains are offering healthier alternatives, including fruit and salads, but some nutritionists consider that not enough effort is being made. Rather than offering a small amount of healthier alternatives, a more holistic view of the menu is required. It has been suggested that fast food chains should use leaner cuts of meat, whole grain bread, more vegetables, low sugar soda drinks and lower fat French fries.

Fast Food Makes You FatWhile fast food outlets are an easy target when addressing the ills of the modern diet and fast fat gain, broader lifestyle factors need to be taken into consideration. Fast food outlets provide an important service to those who are on a limited budget, or for those who have no time to cook. They usually offer a range of portion sizes, low sugar drinks and healthy meal options. The problem also lies in the choices that consumers make about what they want to eat. Education and information as to food content and healthy nutritionhealthy nutrition is an important element in informing people so that they are equipped to make better nutritional choices.

I think out of all of the fast food joints there are Subway probably does have the leanest menu. I’m not saying this because Jared lost all his weight there; I’m saying this because of my own observations. At Subway you can a wrap made with chicken breast – and not the lunch meat variety, a real chicken breast – and add healthy veggies to it. If you add just a little ranch dressing to the sandwich, you will less calories, stay within your limits or close to them, and enjoy a great sandwich. If you have to eat at a fast food chain, eat something like this to minimize the effects.
