The following list contains some of the more common and effective prostate cancer treatment options:

1. Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is just one of the many prostate cancer treatments that provide good results. Two types of radiation therapy are used in the treatment for prostate cancer, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and brachytherapy.

2. Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy is used in the treatment of prostate cancer patients as well as urology prostate cancer patients. Hormone therapy is used to lower the testosterone levels in the body.

3. Radical prostatectomy or prostate cancer surgery

This is one of the more extreme prostate cancer treatment options but has a very high success rate. Treating prostate cancer is done in stages with surgery as the last option. This procedure involves removing the prostate gland and the tissue that surrounds it. With no known prostate cancer cure, surgery is sometimes the perfect choice when treating prostate cancer.

4. HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

HIFU is a one of the more highly targeted and minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment options available. At a localized area, the temperature is increased rapidly and tissue is destroyed.

5. Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is not a prostate cancer cure but rather a minimally invasive technique like that of high intensity focused ultrasound. Cryotherapy involves the freezing of prostate cells which causes destruction.

6. Watchful waiting

Prostate cancer is slow growing and life expectancy in patients with or without prostate cancer remains the same. Under close doctor supervision, watchful waiting can be just the route prescribed without moving into a procedure that causes unnecessary repercussions.

7. Laparoscopic surgery

One of the newer types of surgery to remove the prostate is laparoscopic surgery. Small incisions are made and a slender tube with camera attached makes up the laparoscopic tool. While not a prostate cancer cure all, laparoscopic surgery offers a faster healing time and shorter hospital stay.

8. Retropubic prostatectomy

Surgery of this kind is mostly recommended to patients in good health and early onset of prostate cancer. While there is no known prostate cancer cure, it is important to examine all options. Retropubic prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate through an incision in the lower abdomen directly beneath the pubic bone.

9. Perineal prostatectomy

This type of surgery option is less common. The prostate is reached via an incision between the anus and scrotum. Lymph nodes cannot be checked for cancer through this method of surgery and it is somewhat difficult to preserve the nerves that aid in erections, therefore perinial prostatectomy is not widely used.

10. External Beam Radiation

This type of radiation therapy allows a concentrated area of the prostate to be radiated and cancer cells to be destroyed. Radiation is an alternative to other prostate cancer surgery options. Treatment usually occurs once per day and five days per week, for approximately six to eight weeks duration.
