The Charms of Earl Grey

Earl Grey is probably the most well-known and popular flavored black tea. It is found all throughout the world, but is most commonly sought after in England and the United States, and with the benefits that is provides, it is no surprise.

The subtle floral and citrus flavor of Earl Grey is a combination of a classic “English Breakfast” style black tea with natural citrus oils from the skin of the bergamot fruit.

Earl Grey makes a great morning tea to drink because the caffeine in the black tea will wake you up and get your circulating. It also kick starts your digestive system and has a bolder, stronger flavor than other types of tea leaves.

Bergamot, a small yellow colored orange, is very bright and citrusy in flavor. This citrus is native to Southern Italy and is most typically used for its natural oils, but pieces of the fruit can also be found in versions of the popular sweet treat, Turkish Delight.

The oils from the bergamot fruit are also thought to help brighten your mood and fight depression.

A lot of frequent Earl Grey tea drinkers testify to how the beverage lifts their spirit, and they don’t feel at their best when they start the day without a cup.

These days, there are many different types of Earl Grey, including Lady Grey which sometimes contains actual citrus pieces or flower buds such as lavender or rose. Earl Grey Crèmes tend to have a sweeter and warmer flavor because vanilla is added (these are tasty as a frothed tea latte). Another way you might find Earl Grey is with green or white tea leaves to make the blend a little less caffeinated, but with the same great Earl Grey flavor that you are used to.

Are you an Earl Grey fan? If you enjoy milk in your cup of tea, try blending an Earl Grey Latte, just use the chai latte recipe (here) and replace the chai tea leaves with your favorite Earl Grey blend for a delicious and creamy brew.

Do You Tea will have their own classic Earl Grey blend available online coming this spring. Be sure to look out for it!
