While a few years ago, no one really wanted to discuss erectile dysfunction (ED) because of the stigma attached to this sensitive topic, now men can talk about the problem and, more importantly, can find an array of options for dealing with the problem. ED treatment can involve the use of prescription medications, such as Viagra, but can also be more natural in origin.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which the male’s ability to perform sexually is impeded. The cause could be a failure to keep an erection or to maintain an erection for a sufficient length of time. A broader definition includes cases of unexplained reduction in sexual desire or inabilities to obtain orgasm.

Common Conventional Treatments

Erectile dysfunction treatment is most commonly treated via prescriptions. Since the late 1990’s, several drugs have been introduced to the market which are generally meant to loosen up the muscles in the penis so blood can flow into it more easily thus making an erection possible and sustainable. These drugs include Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. A certain percentage of men are not helped by these drugs. In their case, penile implants can sometimes be used to help with erectile functioning.

Natural Treatments

Unfortunately, the side effects associated with many conventional treatments, such as an increased risk of heart complications, make them undesirable options for many men suffering from ED. Thankfully, natural alternatives are available and have shown promising potential.

One idea is to add certain types of herbal remedies to your diet. Gingko biloba, for example, actually increases blood flow through the body, including to the penis. One drawback though is the risk of blood thinning which could be dangerous if you have a surgery scheduled. Ginseng is another option. You can drink tea brewed with this herb and supposedly will have some relief from ED. Ginseng is one of the better options because research has consistently found it to be a safe herb.

An herb you should avoid using for treatment is called Yohimbe. Although it has been shown to effectively alleviate psychologically-caused ED problems, the herb can comes packed with some nasty side effects, including dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headaches, and increased blood pressure.

Some supplements, such as DHEA (dehydreoepiandrosterone), have also been shown to improve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Because DHEA is a hormone, it can help men whose ED is caused by low levels of testosterone production. However, you should consult a physician before starting these supplements.

If you’re ready to try a very different approach, you could look into acupuncture. This Chinese treatment involves the strategic placement of fine needles into points along the body. The needles supposedly stimulate the body to help it regain its balance. While you may not be convinced that your erectile dysfunction has anything to do with an imbalance in your body, this type of treatment has been successful for some patients, at least anecdotally. The science is still out on acupuncture’s effectiveness.

It is nice that men have options to treat this problem, but it would be nice if the networks refrained from running ED commercials during family viewing time. This can lead to an unnecessary conversation if children of a certain age are watching.

My husband's doctor recommended gingko for my husband's ED and we were both amazed at how well it worked. It has also improved his memory making it a two fold improvement.
