Coenzyme Q10 as Blood Clots Treatment

Blood Clots Treatment

  • CoQ10 is found naturally in the mitochondria of our cells but amounts can be decreased by certain diseases and age
  • Coenzyme Q10 reduces the stickiness of the platelets so blood clots are less likely to form
  • The compound is a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent atherosclerosis, a serious risk factor in cardiovascular disease

Heart attacks are frequently caused by blood clots that have clogged up the artery leading to the heart. The clot prevents oxygen from reaching the heart and this can cause damage to the muscle quite quickly. For this reason, blood clots treatment can be one of the most important steps taken to help people lower their heart attack risks. Some studies have found that Coenzyme Q10 can play an important role in this treatment.

What is Coenzyme Q10?

Our bodies naturally contain Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the mitochondria of our cells. The compound is essential in the manufacturing of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that helps the cells get the energy they need to keep functioning properly. Additionally, CoQ10 can fight free radicals in the body because it is a powerful antioxidant, too.

Although we all have CoQ10 in our bodies, some people do not have enough. This can be a result of certain types of diseases, such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, or simply getting older. Unfortunately, some studies have shown a connection between low levels of CoQ10 and the severity of heart attacks when they occur.

Coenzyme Q10 and Blood Clots Treatment

Besides being a powerful antioxidant, it could play an important role in lowering the risk of heart attacks. Early studies have shown that CoQ10 reduces the stickiness of platelets. Platelets cause the blood to clot which is a good thing if you’re bleeding from a wound but within the arteries sticky platelets can cause the blood clots that can become lodged and disrupt blood circulation. More research is still needed before physicians can begin recommending CoQ10 as a way to reduce their health risks but the initial studies have been very promising and provide hope to millions of Americans at risk of not only heart attacks but also strokes caused by blood clots.

Fat Peroxidation

While blood clots treatment is one of the newest reasons to care about Coenzyme Q10, it’s not the only reason. As mentioned earlier, this compound is a powerful antioxidant. Part of what it can do in the body is to prevent fat peroxidation in the body. What occurs in the body is that the becomes oxidized because of the free radicals and this can lead to a condition called atherosclerosis.

With atherosclerosis, the lipoproteins build up on the sides of the arteries. On the sides, the cholesterol begins to harden and causes the arteries to become less flexible. The cholesterol also ends up narrowing the passages for blood which can constrict circulation. In some cases, parts of the build-up on the walls can break off and can act like a clot that blogs the flow of blood to the heart or to the brain.

Because CoQ10 is an antioxidant it can actually reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis even if you’re LDL levels are elevated.

Other Benefits

Coenzyme Q10 provides a wide range of health benefits. Some studies have shown that it can help lower blood pressure and level out blood sugar. Additionally, it may be able to shrink tumors to assist in breast cancer treatment and can even speed up the healing associated with periodontal disease.

    Sue Says:
Blood clots can lead to many health complicatons including stroke and are more common among inactive and/or obese individuals. Blood clots are life threatening however exercise can help prevent their formation and assist in dissoving of existing clots. This fact was discovered and presented to the American Heart association in 2003 by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The study found that levels of an essential blood clot dissolver known as tissue type plaminogen activator (t-PA) are greatly diminished in overweight men (by as much as 30%). This reduced protection in the blood stream leads eventually to problems with blood clots. Walking for a period of three months for a mere 45 minutes a day, five days a week however increased the amount of t-PA in the obese participants blood by as much as 50%. The study showed that after this walking regime the obese subjects had similar levels of t-PA in their blood to that of lean participants in the study.
