While we know that adults are gaining weight and becoming obese at an alarming rate in the United States and other parts of the Western world, it might come as a surprise that the same is true for a large number of children. The percentage of obese children has risen dramatically over the last three decades and continues to increase. Currently, about 17% of all children under the age of 19 are overweight or obese. Thankfully, there are steps we can take to help and to prevent overweight kids.

The Dangers of the Weight

Overweight kids face some big health challenges in their lives. They are more likely to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease at a younger age. There is also a good chance that they will continue to gain weight as they get older which could lead to mobility problems, back and knee strain, breathing problems, and a reduced quality of life.

On top of the health factors, children who are overweight have problems in their social lives as well. Some are picked on in schools because of their weight. They may also have low self-esteem and a poor self-image. All of these problems can cause life-long difficulties that children shouldn’t have to deal with.

The good news is this overweight health problems can be prevented, especially if parens are willing to make a change in their own lifestyle choices.

Activity & Obesity

One of the main reasons for the increase in overweight kids has been parental fear about allowing their children to play outside. While childhood kidnappings do happen, the risk to a child of being abducted by someone outside of their family is less than 1%. However, the risk of an overweight child growing up to be an obese adult is much, much higher.

Children, and adults, should get exercise daily. While 30 minutes of walking may be sufficient for parents, children can use a lot more. Programs are available through schools and other organizations that will involve kids in physical fitness and sports which will help them keep their weight down. Plus, if they see their parents being active, they are more likely to develop those same habits which can help them ward off obesity as they get older, too.

Nutrition & Obesity

Of course, overweight kids also tend to eat unhealthy foods. However, putting a child on a diet is never recommended. Because children are growing, restricting their calorie intake could be dangerous to their development. Instead, changes should be made in what they are eating and not necessarily in how many calories they consume. For example, some families eat fast food several times a week. Although convenient, fast food is higher in calories and fat than meals cooked at home, on average. Instead, families could choose healthier fast food items (grilled chicken instead of cheeseburgers, for instance) or could opt for slightly less convenient sit down restaurants where salads, vegetables, and other healthy choices are also served.

Limits should also be placed on candy, sweets, sugary sodas and beverages, and high fat snacks. Look for healthier alternatives and smaller serving sizes to help your child reign in his or her unhealthy eating habits. And, of course, model this behavior yourself. That makes lifestyle changes much easier for your child.

A well-rounded diet and exercise plan can help your child fight against obesity. Because it can be difficult to get a child or teenager to eat food with the necessary nutrients they need, there are natural supplements likeChildren's Formula Chewables for children and Take One Multiple or Trace Minerals for young adults.

The news is full of reports about high blood pressure, increased rates of diabetes, and development of more joint and growth problems because of obesity. However, many of these reports are focusing on the youngest members of society. Obesity in American children has skyrocketed in recent years and is threatening the next generation with momentous physical and emotional health risks. Thankfully, this problem can be prevented if more people recognize the severity of the problem, its causes, and some important steps that can be taken in the right direction.

A Growing Problem

The statistics of childhood obesity are enormous. Since 1980, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found the rate of obesity among children between 6 and 19 years of age has tripled. For preschoolers, the rate has doubled. Even a large number of children who are not currently classified as being overweight are at risk. Another CDC study found that 15% of kids under 19 were at risk of becoming overweight.

While being obese has a child can lead to the early onset of health problems, it can also be a tremendously powerful risk factor in the development of adult obesity. The majority of overweight teens do not lose weight as they get older. In fact, about 70% of them will continue to be overweight or obese as adults. If their parents were also heavy, the risk goes up another 10%.

As a result of these high numbers, children are at an increasing risk of developing diseases that are often associated with obesity. With Type 2 diabetes, for example, the risk of developing the disease during an entire lifetime is now 30 to 40% for the younger generation. Many are developing the disease earlier and earlier which increases the risk of serious complications in the future.

Causes of Childhood Obesity

One of the most startling statistics of all is that about one-third of all children between the ages of 4 and 19 are eating fast food for at least one meal every single day. With those types of nutritional habits, it is obvious why childhood obesity is becoming such a serious problem. Fast food is notoriously high in saturated fat and calories while being relatively low in nutritional value. Plus, fast food eaters tend to not have very balanced diets so they are not going to be getting the vegetables, fruits, fiber, and other foods they need to fight back against these bad habits.

Another cause is the lack of activity. Today, children are sheltered in their homes instead of being encouraged to go outside and play. Fewer children walk to school and more schools are cutting out recess as well as mandatory gym classes which further reduces time for exercise.

Child Obesity Prevention

Lifestyle changes within individual families are the best way to combat the problem. Improving diet and increasing exercise levels can make a tremendous impact on kids. Parents need to realize that the health habits they learn now are going to follow them into their adulthood. Setting a good example is a great choice, even overweight parents who start working towards dropping pounds and reducing their sedentary habits can help their children.

At a broader level, parents can being petitioning their schools to bring back mandatory gym classes and to ensure that each child in the school is receiving some type of exercise every day.

Obesity in adolescents has become a real problem but even if it affects your child now that doesn’t mean he or she can’t be helped to lose the extra weight before entering adulthood.

Children's Formula Chewables for children and Take One Multiple or Trace Minerals for young adults can help your child get all the nutrients they need to stay healthy and fit..

Adolescence can already be one of the most difficult parts of growing up. With the combination of mental and physical changes, they don’t also need to worry about health issues such as Type II Diabetes or high blood pressure. Yet that’s exactly what is happening because of an alarming increase of obesity in adolescents. Thankfully, there are some ways to reduce your child’s or teenager’s obesity risk.

Defining Obesity

Whenever you worry about weight loss and young people, the issue of body image is of real concern. Because of the media, many young people have a distorted idea of what a healthy appearance should be. Many parents also are in denial about their child’s weight problems. Both of these reasons make it important to understand what is meant by being overweight and being obese.

Today, the main measurement is called the body mass index (BMI). This index takes into calculation your child’s age and height to determine whether or not his or her weight is appropriate. If a teen’s BMI is higher than between 85% and 95% of peers, he or she is classified as overweight. Teenage obesity is defined as an adolescent whose BMI is higher than 95% of other teens.

Reducing the Risk

With teenage obesity on the rise, preventing weight gain in young people is crucial but also difficult. Not only are there more unhealthy foods available more conveniently than ever before but other factors can influence whether or not an adolescent has a high obesity risk. For example, a one year study of 500 teenage girls found that the girls who slept less than six hours a night and who spent the most time on the Internet were at greater risk of weight gain than others.

Obviously, one of the best ways to reduce the risk for your teen is to set a good example at home. Young people learn most of their eating habits from watching their parents. If you serve healthy meals at home and get exercise daily, your teen is more likely to follow your lead.

Dealing with Obesity

Obesity in adolescents has become a real problem but even if it affects your child now that doesn’t mean he or she can’t be helped to lose the extra weight before entering adulthood. First, parents can talk to their children and set some healthy weight loss goals. Discussing the potential risks of being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes, can help drive home the importance of taking action early.

Parents can also begin teaching their children about portion control. Many young people today have no idea how much of anything they should be eating which means they end up eating too much. Helping them learn how much meat, vegetables, and other food groups should be included in each meal is an important lesson that will benefit them now and into the future.

Encouraging more activity is also vital. Doing aerobic exercises at least five to six times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time can help boost metabolism and result in weight gain.

While modern society has brought us many amazing benefits, including antibiotics to treat life-threatening infections and new methods of cultivating food to feed an ever-growing population, it has also produced a serious health epidemic: teenage obesity.

The Growing Problem of Teenage Obesity

Children between the ages of 6 and 19 are gaining weight at unprecedented rates. Between 1999 and 2000, 15 percent were overweight. That number had tripled from the percentage just two decades earlier. So far in the 21st century, the rate of overweight children and teens has continued to climb drastically. Today, teenage obesity has reached the point where it is beginning to cause health problems in young people not normally seen until later in life.

Before discussing the risks of teenage obesity, parents need to understand how to determine whether or not their adolescent would fall into this category. The current way to medically assess your child’s weight is by looking at his or her body mass index (BMI). While set rates are used to determine normal BMI for adults, this is not the case for anyone under 20. Instead, their BMI is charted on a graph to compare them with other people of the same age. If your child has a BMI higher than 85 to 95 percent of other comparable teens, he or she is considered overweight. A BMI higher than 95 percent compared to other teens means your child is suffering from teenage obesity.

Of course you don’t have to head to the physician to determine if your child has a weight problem. Besides looking for the physical signs of excessive weight gain, you can look at the overall health of your child. For example, if your child gets short of breath by climbing a few stairs or doing normal physical activities, he or she may be considered overweight or obese. Teens that are inactive and complain of being tired are often overweight as well.

Health Problems Associated with Teenage Obesity

Just as being overweight can be unhealthy for adults, it can also be harmful to your child’s health. Teenage obesity, for example, can have a profound effect on growing bodies. Blount’s Disease causes the bones of the lower legs to deform because of the pressure of too much weight. Extra weight on a body starting from a young age puts more strain on the joints and can lead to early onset arthritis.

High blood pressure and cholesterol are also common problems associated with teenage obesity. Experiencing these problems at a young age can greatly affect the chances of developing heart disease at an earlier age. Type 2 Diabetes has also begun showing up in young people in larger numbers. Having high blood sugar as a teen can also increase damage to your body caused by the disease.

Other health problems associated with teenage obesity include increased risks of infertility, sleep apnea, gallstones, and depression.

Treating the Problem of Teenage Obesity

The good news is that parents can take action to deal with teenage obesity. First, they can start improving the diet of the entire family by controlling portion sizes, eliminating fast foods, cutting back on saturated fats, and eating more balanced meals. Adding exercise as part of the daily routine, even if that exercise is just walking the family dog, can also help your teen shed pounds, increase his or her metabolism, and help prevent long-lasting health problems.

Children afflicted with obesity is becoming a common problem in America today. It is likely that you have seen an overweight child or an obese child when you are out and about in society. Obesity in children is fast becoming an epidemic, and this is worrying many parents, doctors, teachers, and scientists. The cause of obesity in children is not due to one specific thing, but can come from a variety of factors. Science has long known about the link between genetics and obesity across all age groups, and if a child is born to parents who are obese, that child stands a much higher risk of becoming obese. This is not completely cut and dried, however, and many obese parents have children who are active and at a healthy weight, and do not suffer from obesity.

A low metabolism can cause one to become overweight as a child. Even if you are born with a low metabolism, you can raise it through exercise. However, with video games and TV being popular activities, in addition to environmental locations with extreme temperatures, many children gain weight due to inactivity and little to no physical exercise exerted. These children need to go out and play, or if the weather is not permitting, use the TV for positive influences like exercise games and programs for kids. There are many video games and programs focused on the positive influence of exercise for younger ones and these can be considered an investment into your childrens’ health.

There are some factors that can increase your child’s risk of becoming obese. Obesity as mentioned earlier is normally a result of a number of factors working together. A diet full of foods with a high calorie count, foods from fast food restaurants, pastries or other baked goods, and snacks that are empty on nutritious value, can increase the risk of you and your child for obesity. Some children have problems that affect them emotionally, and in this case may overeat as a source of comfort, stress relief, or release from bad emotions like sadness or anger. Boredom is another reason that your child may eat to fill a void or just to have something to do, and this can directly lead to obesity.

If your child is obese, take a long look at the food you are purchasing from the grocery store. Most kids do not have a choice in the foods available in the home, but they see on TV the extreme advertising of “fun kid foods” and want to eat what is wonderfully promoted as the perfect food that you must buy for your child. If you are buying these foods that are processed, extremely high in sugar, canned, and frozen, then you may need to rethink the grocery list. Instead, offer your child plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and nutritious snacks during the day. Make meals that are low in fat and calories but very high in the nutrients your child needs to grow and develop properly. The difficult change is in breaking bad habits and instilling the good habits and effort it takes to buy more balanced foods and prepare them for your child. In starting at the grocery store and ending in the preparation of nutritious meals, both you and your child will reap the benefits.

You should also encourage your child to get active, and do so with them. Go for family walks, join the YMCA or a family oriented gym or community center, where physical activity is normal and encouraged, and all shapes and sizes of people gather in a common goal. Encourage your child to participate in sports, both in school and in community sports programs. Keeping your child active will help increase their metabolism, and prevent or reverse obesity. Exercise raises the metabolism of your child for as long as twelve hours after they are done with the activity, and during this period your child’s body will burn much more fat and calories, assisting in weight loss and giving them a deserved and wonderful lift in their personal self esteem. The increased exercise, when continued on a regular basis, will also help set your child’s metabolism higher permanently, so that they burn fat and calories more efficiently every second of every day, even while sleeping.

Remember, eating a healthy diet, full of nutrients and fiber, is the first step in helping you and your child combat obesity. Throw in some physical activities and exercises, and you all can be on the way to recovering from obesity and losing weight in a way that is healthy and effective. Make sure that both of you have access to foods that are not processed, along with healthy snacks and meals. If eating at a fast food restaurant is necessary, almost all fast food restaurants now offer healthy items, like salads and fresh fruit, so even if you and your child are rushed and do not have time to prepare a meal you can still eat healthy and in turn help combat obesity in your child.

Peer pressure is a part of growing up. Many young children and teenagers all over are doing things they instinctively know are wrong. Peers apply psychological pressure steering “friends” into an area that is knowingly unacceptable. This can be a major source of conflict, because many age groups feel a need to fit in and conform. Many times it may seems easier to give in to peer pressure and do something you should not. In doing this, you gain social acceptance from your peers rather than stand up for what you know is right. It is important that all age groups, especially school aged children, understand how to stand up to peer pressure. Unfortunately, this problematic part of growing up starts in kindergarten and continues all the way through high school, may even continue into college. The time when peer pressure occurs most frequently is in high school.

Standing up to peer pressure can seem extremely difficult for your child, especially in the higher grades. Obviously, most teenagers want to be popular or at the very least accepted. Many fear being picked on or made fun of, so these feelings are eliminated by giving in to “peer pressure.” Talking to your teen about the importance of making the right decisions and ways to resist peer pressure will most likely let him or her know you are aware of the situation. Many parents tell their kids it is permissible to use Mom and Dad as an excuse not to go along. At a younger age, the pressuring peers will likely understand if your child says “no” based on the parents founding out. Parents should set rules for all age groups accordingly, and expect them to be followed. Have consequences for your child’s or your teenager’s actions, both good and bad, and reinforce the belief that your son or daughter is responsible for what they do. Most likely other parents are also establishing similar rules and speaking to their children on how to handle this age old problem.

There may be certain personality traits that can put your son or daughter at a higher risk of giving in to peer pressure. Common traits include low self esteem and a lack of confidence. Dealing with these factors may make your teenager more likely to look for acceptance from the wrong group. If your teenager is isolated or distant from the family or friends, the percentages are also more likely that they will give in to peer pressure because of a need for acceptance. Peer pressure can have serious consequences. For example, lets say a teenager goes along and does something “bad” having given in to the pressure applied and then ends up being charged with a crime, such as breaking and entering or theft. Peer pressure usually leads to bad choices such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using drugs, and yes, committing crimes. It is important to help your family understand how to say no to peer pressure and feel good about themselves in doing so. Seeking the advice of a guidance counselor, minister, or doctor together with your teenager can help make a difference in how your son or daughter perceives themselves.

Handling peer pressure may seem hard, but it does not have to be. Parents can explain that they had to deal with peer pressure when they were teenagers and it is okay to say no or just walk away. Let them know it is okay to be upset and defiant if a peer is trying to talk them into doing something wrong. Reminding them that there is strength in having convictions and knowing right from wrong, and with the strength comes self esteem and confidence. Always take the time to listen to your teenage and really hear what they are telling you. Pay attention to more than just the words. Your teenager may speak louder with body language than with actually telling you what is going on. Understand that this is a difficult time and sympathize with them without giving approval of what is happening. Remind your teenager that you are always available and will come to their “rescue” in an emergency, even if they have made some bad choices. Do not be judgmental, instead be supportive. Reinforce that you believe in them, but that they still know and understand the consequences of their actions. Most teenagers know that you accept and love them no matter what, but they usually have a hard time dealing with emotions, good and bad. Children who know they are loved and accepted are much less likely to give in to peer pressure and make the wrong choices.
