Kidney organ donation carries same risks as other surgeries

If you choose to donate a kidney: top ten scariest side effects of donating a kidney

If you are considering the topic of kidney donation, you must face the fact that it is a very serious surgery. Donating a kidney is not only a physical quest but can affect other areas of your life. Today’s surgery is a lot less invasive than in days gone by, but there are still the same serious health risks as in any surgery. What are the top ten scariest facts and side effects of donating a kidney?

1) Before you donate a kidney

Potential kidney donors undergo a complete medical history and physical examination to evaluate their suitability for donation. Extensive blood tests are performed on both donor and recipient. The blood samples are used to tissue type for antigen matches, and confirm that blood types are compatible. A panel of reactive antibody (PRA) is performed by mixing white blood cells from the donor and serum from the recipient to ensure that the recipient antibodies will not have a negative reaction to the donor antigens. A urine test is performed on the donor to evaluate his kidney function. In some cases, a special dye that shows up on x rays is injected into an artery, and x rays are taken to show the blood supply of the donor kidney (a procedure called an arteriogram).

2) You may not be considered for kidney organ donation

Age is an important factor for the donor. Kidney donation organizations warn their patients that the age of the donor might not be in the best health interests if the donor is too old.

3) Infection and bleeding

As with any surgical procedure, the kidney transplantation procedure carries some risk for both a living donor and a graft recipient. Possible complications include infection and bleeding (hemorrhage). The most common complication for kidney recipients is a urine leak. In approximately 5% of kidney transplants, the urethra suffers some damage, which results in the leak. This problem is usually correctable with follow-up surgery.

4) Donate a kidney – recuperate for 2-3 weeks

You will likely be able to return to work 2-3 weeks after the surgery, depending on the type of work. However some donors require a longer recovery period if their work requires heavy lifting or other physical demands.

5) Developing high blood pressure or osteoporosis through kidney donation

The biggest risk to the recovering transplant recipient is not from the operation or the kidney itself, but from the immunosuppressive medication he or she must take. Because these drugs suppress the immune system, the patient is susceptible to infections such as cytomegalovirus-virus (CMV) and varicella (chickenpox). The immunosuppressants can also cause a host of possible side effects, from high blood pressure to osteoporosis. Prescription and dosage adjustments can lessen side effects for some patients.

6) Immune suppression = cancer risk ?

Following kidney transplantation, some recipients may face a 3-fold increased risk of certain cancer types, according to a study in the December, 2007 issue of JAMA.

Immune suppression after organ transplantation is associated with a markedly increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Kaposi sarcoma. Whether other cancers occur at increased rates is uncertain, because there have been few long-term population-based studies, according to background information in the article.

7) What happens immediately after the kidney is removed?

Once removed, kidneys from live donors and cadavers are placed on ice and flushed with a cold preservative solution. The kidney can be preserved in this solution for 24-48 hours until the transplant takes place. The sooner the transplant takes place after harvesting the kidney, the better the chances are for proper functioning.

Make sure you keep the best kidney

It is automatically decided that the donor keeps the better of the two kidneys. You might want to confirm with the surgical staff and medical provider as to exactly how that’s done and how can the donor be given that guarantee.

9) Side effects of donating a kidney might be your future insurance coverage

A recent article that evaluated data on a donor’s ability to obtain life, disability, or health insurance after surgery found that the majority of donors surveyed did not experience any problems. However, the article indicated that a small percentage of donors reported some difficulty with their insurability. All donors are encouraged to check with their insurance companies to verify their policy.

10) Kidney organ donation = you are responsible for your bills

Living donors are financially responsible for their routine annual health maintenance testing (e.g., pap smear, mammogram, colonoscopy, etc.) or medical clearance that may be required for pre-existing conditions. However, all other testing required for the living donor evaluation as well as the hospitalization costs and physician services provided during the donation process are covered either by recipient’s insurance or the University of Maryland Medical Center. Donors will be provided with a special billing form that they will need to present during their testing and hospitalization, rather than their private health insurance information. Transplant-related complications are covered for at least 90 days.

Depending on the type of incontinence you suffer from, different treatment methods are available

For millions of men and women, urinary inconsistency is a problem that adversely affects their quality of life. Women suffer from these problems twice as often as men. Incontinence, which involves the leakage of urine from the bladder, can happen for many reasons and can fall under several categories. For at least some of these urinary problems, bladder suspension surgery, also known as colposuspension surgery, can be a useful treatment.

Understanding Your Problem

As mentioned above, incontinence comes in several types. Your treatment options, including surgery, depend on which type you currently suffer from. Overactive bladder is one type of urinary inconsistency problem. Symptoms would include an increase in urinary frequency which may or may not occur with leakage.

Overflow incontinence happens because your bladder is too full. This might happen just because you need to use the restroom and have not been able to or because your bladder is having problems emptying correctly. Urge incontinence happens unexpectedly, such as while you’re asleep. For these patients, the leakage involves large amounts of urine. Stress incontinence, on the other hand, involves small amounts of urine leaking out when you do something physical, such as laugh or cough.

Treatment Options

For an overactive bladder, the most common treatment is medication. Urge and overflow incontinence can be treated with behavioral changes, as well as exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles. Those strengthening exercises can often be useful against stress incontinence, too. Roughly, 10% of women end up requiring some type of surgical procedure to treat incontinence.

Many physicians will recommend bladder suspension surgery for patients with severe cases of stress incontinence because most of the other treatments are not going to be effective in treating the condition. Another procedure known as the urethra sling could also be used. A recent study of patients found slightly higher success levels with the sling method.

Another option is the use of Tension Free Vaginal Tape. The tape is inserted so that it is between the vagina and the urethra then attached to part of the pubic bone. Because of this connection, more support is given so that stress incontinence is reduced significantly.

Despite these options, the suspension surgery is still the more common option.

Bladder Suspension Surgery

During the surgery, a cut is made on the stomach, usually just above the bikini area. The surgeon will remove the uterus and bladder from their attachment to the area called the pelvic floor. The weakness of the pelvic floor is causing the bladder to be lower and is causing the incontinence problem. After these are detached from the pelvic floor, they are re-attached but in their designated position and a special stitching is used to help give the pelvic floor greater support.

While the surgery is the most commonly performed, the success rate is not necessarily thrilling. Even after the procedure, 30 to 50% of women still suffer from incontinence, although some improvement may be experienced. Additionally, there is the continued risk of the bladder slipping out of place again over time.

Bladder dysfunction arises when there is a blockage or delay in the transmission of signals from the central nervous system which control the bladder and muscle surrounding the bladder opening. This controls the accumulation and flow of urine. It is this muscle, known as the sphincter, which gives one control over urination.

Disorders of the bladder are many and symptoms may include high urinary frequency, discomfort when urinating such as a burning sensation, and the presence of blood or bacteria in the urine. These symptoms indicate a urinary tract infection. This discussion focuses on bladder disorders and possible treatment strategies.

Causes of Bladder Dysfunction

Bacteria found in the digestive tract may cause bladder disorders. Sexual intercourse could also cause cystitis though one doesn’t have to be active sexually to develop it. Women are more likely to develop this because the urethra is situated close to the anus and the distance between the urethral opening and bladder is short.

Urinary Incontinence

This refers to loss of bladder control which involves bladder muscles being too weak or too active. Loss of bladder control manifests more typically with age, commonly occurring in women over 50 years. When bladder muscles are weak, activities such as laughing, coughing, sneezing or carrying a heavy object causes leakage of urine. When bladder muscles are too active, you experience high urinary frequency even when the bladder has little urine.

The condition, if chronic, may be caused by a variety of factors including nervous disorders, injuries related to the brain or spinal cord, pelvic muscle weakness, defects associated with birth, blockage of the urethra, and weakness in the bladder muscles. Some diseases such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and diabetes can also cause the condition. In some cases the condition is temporary and is caused by infections of the urinary tract, restricted mobility, childbirth, and side effects of certain medications.

Very weak or too active bladder muscles may be reflected in some leaking or wetting that cannot be controlled and can cause one quite some awkwardness. The fear of public embarrassment hinders many people who suffer this condition from interacting fully and appreciating time with family and friends. When it occurs during sexual activity, it causes great distress. Equally, it may create problems associated with personal hygiene which leads to emotional distress.

Treatment

Antibiotics and other medications are usually used in the treatment of bladder disorders. Simple exercises as advised by your doctor which may include Kegel exercises and bladder training to strengthen bladder muscles can help. In some cases, surgery such as bladder suspension surgery can be undertaken to correct the condition. This procedure basically involves suspending the bladder to prevent uncontrolled leakages of urine.

Managing the diet can have a positive impact on the overall condition of bladder functioning. It is recommended that one maintains intake of the recommended 6-8 glasses of water daily which is important not only for the health of the urinary system but for overall body health. Reducing on your intake of fluids as a measure to control bladder problems is ill-advised. Other treatment strategies involve use of a catheter, which is a very fine tube that can be inserted into the bladder to drain off urine.

Super Saw Palmetto helps men with urinary problems and also helps with ED.

Urinary incontinence is a surprisingly common problem, primarily among women. A survey conducted in 1996 found that more than 13 million people age 15 to 64 suffer from this condition. Over 65, the number increases dramatically. In fact, more than 70% of women living in nursing homes have this problem. The question though is not whether or not the condition is common enough to ignore but whether a cure is out there.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence

While urinary problems, such as infections, can be a temporary cause of urinary incontinence, the problem is also frequently caused by obesity or pregnancy because of the increased pressure on the bladder. After having a baby, the pelvic muscles which help control the flow of urine become weaker so holding in urine as you laugh or cough becomes a challenge. Physical changes after menopause, prostate problems, and diseases like diabetes can also lead to this problem.

This problem should be confused with an overactive bladder which increases your urinary frequency.

Treatment Possibilities

For mild cases of urinary incontinence, you can sometimes correct the problem with behavior methods. Kegel exercises can be done by tightening the muscles used to control the flow of urine while counting to three then releasing. You can repeat as many times as you want and can do the exercises almost anywhere. These are especially important right after giving birth. Delaying trips to urinate and making timed bathroom stops is another way to train your bladder and to correct the problem. Sometimes drinking fewer fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, or losing weight can also reduce urinary incontinence, as well as urinary frequency.

When your problem is a little more severe, you may need to use medications as a treatment. Antispadmodic drugs which calm down the bladder can be used. Some antidepressants are used occasionally to relax the bladder itself. While that may not seem like a good idea, this relaxation causes the muscles at the head of the bladder to contract which helps hold urine in.
In more severe cases, other treatments are required. Urethral inserts and pessary rings are available for women by prescription and can be used to prevent urine leakage. The former is only for temporary blockage during a particular activity, for example. The latter can be left in but needs to be removed occasionally for cleaning. Another approach is to use electrical stimulation which will make the pelvic muscles stronger.

A last resort in most cases is surgery, such as bladder suspension surgery. With this treatment, your surgeon will cut into your abdomen and attach the neck of the bladder to a ligament within your pelvic area so it does not sag. The surgery itself only takes an hour and you’ll be completely asleep during the process. However, recovery time is long – usually six weeks – and you will be required to use a catheter for urination during much of that time. Of course, there are other surgical treatments for this condition, including the injection of bulking agents into the urethra.

If you are a man struggling with bladder problems, there is a natural supplement that could be your saving grace. Check out a product called Super Saw Palmetto which helps men with urinary problems and also helps with ED.

Unlike some of the more common herbs and spices recommend as natural remedies for health conditions, Irish moss may not be the one most commonly known. However, it does have a lengthy history of being used for just this purpose – long before the resurgence in natural treatments. Herbalists, for example, have used Irish moss extract to reduce inflammation and to treat urinary system problems, as well as many other valuable uses.

Irish Moss Basics

Two types of Irish moss exist. One is a moss-like plant that grows flowers and is ideal for gardens. The other is the one we’re talking about here which is a type of seaweed whose scientific name is Chondrus crispus. This type of Irish moss is categorized as red alga and tends to grow along the rocks around the shores of some parts of England and Europe, as well as North America. In fact, you’ll find it throughout Ireland, southern Spain, California, and even Japan.

Irish Moss got its name because it was made famous during the potato famine that struck Ireland in the 1800s. Because people were starving, they became desperate and began eating the red alga that was on the rocks. As a result, the name stuck. Sometimes this alga is also referred to as carrageen moss because of its high carrageen content. Carrageen is a common food additive used to maintain stability within processed foods and as a thickening agent.

Does Irish Moss Reduce Inflammation?

No clear research studies have been done to prove the ability of Irish moss extract to reduce inflammation but generations of anecdotal accounts of its effectiveness can be found in any location where the red alga is plentiful. For example, the Irish recognized the anti-inflammation properties the plant contained so they would use it to treat gastrointestinal upsets or urinary system problems that resulted from inflammation in those parts of the body.

While it’s not completely clear why it would work in this way, the answer might have a connection to the vitamin content. Irish moss contains plenty of major vitamins (known as the A, B, C, D vitamins collectively) and these vitamins are known to reduce inflammation on the skin so they may serve a similar internal purpose as well.

Irish Moss & Other Health Benefits

Treating urinary system problems is also part of what Irish moss extract can do. The Irish also recognized its abilities to treat respiratory problems. Because it contains ingredients that work like an expectorant, people who take it can more easily begin to clear out their lungs which will prevent common colds from becoming pneumonia. The anti-inflammation properties are also useful because they soothe the respiratory tract after severe bouts of coughing.

Irish moss is also used to treat some types of skin conditions, including psoriasis. Again, the ability of the alga to stop inflammation can ease the redness and soreness associated with breakouts of these chronic skin conditions.

Another benefit is that Irish moss extract is a good source of iodine which is an important nutrient that is hard to come by naturally normally. Our most common source is table salt that has been infused with iodine. However, if we don’t get enough of this compound, we could develop serious health conditions such as goiter.

For decades, women who’ve suffered from bladder infections or other urinary tract problems were often told to simply start drinking cranberry juice and it would help take care of it. Research now supports that advice. Cranberry extract is turning out to be exceptionally useful in the fight against urinary tract infections.

Cranberry Facts

The term “cranberry” refers both to the small red fruits and to the shrubs that produce them. These evergreen shrubs grow low to the ground in bogs and are found mostly in the United States and Canada. Interestingly, the name “cranberry” was given to the plants after European settlers found their shape akin to the crane. Only later was the “e” dropped to give the berry its present name.

While most of us eat cranberries at Thanksgiving, there’s a good chance it was one of the foods served at the first Thanksgiving, too. Native Americans have used cranberries for hundreds of years, making it a good chance that the fruit and its benefits were also introduced to the colonists.

Studies on the Benefits of Cranberry Extract

A study conducted a few years ago involving 150 women put the potential benefits of the cranberry to the test. Some of the women were given probiotics. Others were given nothing, and another set was asked to drink cranberry juice on a regular basis for 12 months. At the end of the study, the group of women that drank the juice showed a 20 percent decline in the risk of developing urinary tract infections compared to the other two groups.

Another study of 150 women had one group taking placebos and another cranberry extract tablets. The women who took the tablets ended up showing a significant reduction in the frequency of urinary tract problems during the test year.

Why Does Cranberry Extract Work?

Cranberries fight urinary tract infections because they help stop some types of bacteria from attaching to healthy cells in the body; at least, this concludes findings of a study performed at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The study looked at the fimbriae-type of E. coli bacteria, which is the type of bacteria responsible for most urinary tract infections. Researchers wanted to see what effect cranberry juice would have on the bacteria. They discovered that the juice interfered with the ability of the bacteria to connect with cells, essentially inhibiting the bacteria from starting the infection process.

Another interesting part of the findings showed that the higher the dose of cranberry extract, the less likely it would be for bacteria to attach to cells and begin an attack. Another study done at Yale University using urine samples from several students before and after they consumed cranberry juice yielded similar findings; however, the Yale researchers pointed out that no evidence yet shows that cranberries will treat the urinary tract infections once they’ve started. This means prevention is the key.

Cranberry Juice Alternatives

Many of the studies conducted on the effect of cranberries on urinary tract problems focused on cranberry juice because that was what people have been recommended for generations; however, new research is showing that cranberry extract pills, cranberry sauce, and even dried cranberries can provide similar amounts of protection. Cranberry extract might be a better alternative for diabetics because ordinary cranberry products contain high levels of sugar, which can further disrupt blood sugar numbers.

Burdock tea has many health and healing properties, and this home remedy has been around and in use for centuries. Ancient civilizations understood the properties of the Burdock herb. The herb has high levels of mucilage, insulin and other components which are naturally present in the root of this herb. Burdock herb has long been believed to be a powerful blood purifier that helps eliminate toxins and natural poisons.

Burdock extract can have the same effect as Burdock tea. The herb can help with many aspects of bladder, kidney, and urinary tract problems. When combined with other helpful herbs for the urinary tract and immune systems, Burdock tea can have a very powerful healing effect. The Burdock herb has been shown to fight infection by boosting your immune system and immune response. In addition, the tea also acts as a natural antibacterial and antimicrobial, and can help minimize and eliminate the number of harmful bacteria and other microbes in your body, including your urinary tract.

The tea or Burdock extract can help to soothe your digestive tract, and makes your skin clearer. This herb will help improve your digestion and give you an appetite, and drinking Burdock tea will help lower your blood sugar by a small amount. Burdock tea and extract can help fight joint conditions like arthritis and rheumatism, and can remove toxins and harmful components from your blood. The Burdock herb is also a well know treatment for pulmonary tract irritations such as bronchitis and a chronic smokers cough. The biggest and most popular reason that Burdock extract or tea is used, though, is to combat urinary tract infections and other urinary tract and kidney problems.

The Burdock herb can be very beneficial in relieving urinary tract problems. Infections in the bladder, kidneys, and urinary tract, kidney stones, and other conditions involving this system. The herb acts as a diuretic, causing your body to eliminate more water and waste. One reason for common urinary tract infections is not enough fluids. When you do not drink enough water, urine sits in your kidneys and bladder and the bacteria multiply and grow stronger. Frequent urination during the day prevents this, but when you do not drink enough water your urine starts out dark and concentrated. Burdock seeds are believed to help prevent kidney and bladder stones, and to treat and break down any stones that are present. The seeds help to flush out the urinary tract system, and to slowly break down the stones so that they become much smaller and are easier and less painful to pass through your system. The Burdock herb can also help soothe inflammation and ease the pain from urinary tract infections and other problems.

Slippery elm and fennel are both herbs that can be combined with the Burdock herb to boost the healing and beneficial effects. Using Burdock tea with or without other herbs can minimize your discomfort and symptoms, help you break up and get rid of stones in your kidney and bladder, prevent and soothe inflammation in your urinary tract, and prevent urinary tract infections. Burdock tea also helps the other systems and organs in your body as well, keeping you fit and healthy from head to toe. Urinary tract infections and problems can be very painful, and can disrupt your life and normal activities quite a bit. Using Burdock tea or extract will help you avoid urinary tract infections and other urinary tract problems.

Urinary tract infections can be mild, severe, or anywhere in between, but they all have one thing in common. They are very uncomfortable, and can make urination difficult, or even impossible at times. There are ways that a urinary tract infection can be treated and prevented, so that this condition goes away and does not come back. The secret to great urinary tract health, and this includes your kidneys and bladder, is a small red berry called the cranberry. Cranberry juice when taken regularly can help prevent and ease any urinary tract infections symptoms. Humans have used cranberries and their juice to treat urinary tract infections and problems since almost the beginning of time, and science has proven that cranberry works wonders at stopping and getting rid of urinary tract infections.

Cranberries pack a very tart punch. In addition, they contain compounds called proanthocyanidins, or also known as PACs, and these compounds make it harder for bacteria to stick in the urinary tract and bladder walls. This stops the bacteria from multiplying, so that no resulting infection occurs. At one point scientists theorized that the high acidity of cranberries and cranberry juice killed off bacteria, but further studies have shown that instead the bacteria can not stick as well, and so can not reproduce. Medical studies have shown cranberry juice taken regularly will eliminate chronic urinary tract infections and keep new ones from occurring. Cranberry juice has been proven to work even on resistant bacteria strains that do not respond to antibiotic treatment and are very hard to eliminate completely. After you drink cranberry juice, your body shows the effects on bacterial adhesion for the next ten to twelve hours. This means that a glass of cranberry juice every twelve hours could eliminate the need for antibiotics completely.

The causes of urinary tract infections are bacteria, most commonly a bacteria called Escherichia coli, or E. coli. Antibiotics for urinary tract infections can be prescribed, but this treatment causes other problems and medical conditions instead. Antibiotics not only kill off harmful bacteria like E. coli, they also kill off large numbers of beneficial bacteria in your body as well. This means the normal system of checks and balances in your body can be thrown out of balance. For many women this is why it is common to develop a yeast infection after taking antibiotics, because the natural beneficial bacteria keep the yeast in balance, and when antibiotics are used the bacteria dies and the yeast can multiply.

Drinking plenty of water, as well as two glasses of cranberry juice, every single day will help relieve the symptoms of urinary tract infections while eliminating the bacteria that causes these infections. If you do not drink enough fluids, urine will sit in your kidneys and bladder and the bacteria can multiply. The longer it is until you urinate the more the bacteria can reproduce. Drinking plenty of water will ensure that your kidneys, bladder, and entire urinary tract stays flushed out often. The cranberry juice will prevent the bacterial production during times when there is urine in your system.

Cranberries and their juice have been used for hundreds, even thousands, of years to treat urinary tract infections, and that is because this treatment works naturally. In addition, cranberry juice is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bioflavonoids as well. These components help boost your immune system and will help fight off infections before they can become severe. Cranberry juice can help you have great urinary tract health while preventing and treating urinary tract infections.
