The BRAT diet has been used for a significant time in modern medicine and has been advised by millions of pediatricians and doctors all over the world. Why are the BRAT diet for upset stomach and the BRAT diet for diarrhea often given, and is the BRAT diet really the best solution?

The BRAT diet has been used for so long because it works, and the reasoning behind this diet is sound. It consists of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast; all very bland foods that are easy on the stomach and digestive tract. There is very little fat, fiber, or sugars in these foods so they are much easier to digest compared to others, and they can help to calm an upset stomach or nervous intestines.

When prescribing the BRAT diet for upset stomach or the BRAT diet for diarrhea, some physicians may modify the diet slightly by adding yogurt or tea with the reasoning that both of these substances also help soothe and calm the stomach and digestive tract without being hard to digest. The purpose is to let the stomach and digestive tract rest and heal. Some doctors now believe that children should not be placed on the diet for more than 24 hours because it lacks some essential nutrients that are needed for the body to heal and recover from infections and illnesses. The brat diet can be very beneficial and may be the best solution for stomach upset in both children and adults, but with children, the goal is to get them back to a normal diet as soon as possible so they do not miss out on needed nutrients for growth and healing.

Both infectious gastroenteritis and acute gastroenteritis can bring with them many symptoms that are uncomfortable and serious

Medical attention is required if you experience symptoms of eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Although rare, this condition can be very serious and requires medical attention

Below are some common symptoms of gastroenteritis, their remedies and causes. As always, seek medical care if you experience any one symptom for more than 24-48 hours

Here is a short list of the most common causes and remedies of eosinophilic gastroenteritis.

1.	Excessive alcohol intake

All alcohol consumption should be stopped immediately if you experience any symptoms of gastroenteritis. Alcohol is hard on stomach and surrounding organs like the liver and pancreas. Alcohol also weakens the immune system and makes you more prone to infectious gastroenteritis and a sudden attack of acute gastroenteritis.

2.	Too much caffeine

It is not too late to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Eliminating alcohol, tobacco and caffeine can decrease the risk of developing eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Caffeine is hard on the system and causes major organs like the stomach, liver and pancreas to work over time. Try adding more water intake to your diet and less caffeine.

3.	Avoid smoking

It is not too late to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Eliminating alcohol, tobacco and caffeine can decrease the risk of developing chronic gastroenteritis. Smoking, similar to alcohol, weakens the immune system and makes you more susceptible to disease or illness. Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to acquire infectious gastroenteritis than non-smokers.

4.	Obesity

Losing weight goes along with living a healthy lifestyle. Obesity kills and it is important to remember that extra weight is hard on your body and organs. Obesity can weaken your immune system and make you more prone to illness like acute gastroenteritis.

Here is a list of common remedies used to treat eosinophilic gastroenteritis:

1.	Drink peppermint tea

Peppermint in any form provides one of the more common and helpful acute gastroenteritis remedies. The peppermint in the tea actually settles the stomach and helps to hydrate when experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis.

2.	Pomegranates

Natural and home gastroenteritis remedies include the use of pomegranates. Pomegranate juice can be consumed to help control diarrhea. Severe diarrhea and chronic diarrhea can cause dehydration and pomegranate juice can be taken to eliminate various symptoms associated with chronic gastroenteritis.

3.	Bananas

This is the most common of gastroenteritis remedies. Mashed bananas are excellent diarrhea cures in adults and children. Simply take a ripe banana and mash it, then add a teaspoon of tamarind pulp and a splash of salt and consume the mixture approximately two times per day. This concoction will help control the symptoms of gastroenteritis including diarrhea. Bananas are also rich in vitamins and provide added nutrition when losing vitamins and nutrients during severe diarrhea bouts.

4.	Drink a lot of water

Replenishing your body with electrolytes is essential when suffering from chronic gastroenteritis and dehydration. Add a pinch of salt to your water and even a squirt of lemon to eliminate dehydration from occurring.

Where is the pancreas you ask? It’s located deep in the abdomen in between the stomach and the spine

Symptoms of pancreas problems include pancreas enzymes prematurely digesting some of the pancreas itself, an inflamed pancreas that causes severe abdominal pain, and persistent abdominal and back pain

Having a pancreatic cyst does not always mean there will be symptoms. Some people have a pancreatic cyst or a psuedocyst and experience no problems

Pancreatic cysts can become infected and may be cancerous so see a doctor if persistent abdominal pain and fever persist

With the advent of modern technology the diagnosis of the pancreatic cyst has increased. Not because more people are getting them but because they are now more easily detected. Many times a pancreatic cyst is discovered during a scan of the abdomen while looking for other abdominal health problems. As mentioned earlier, there are often times no symptoms of pancreas problems.

The pancreas is an important organ in the body. So you might be asking yourself where is the pancreas and what does it do? It’s located in the upper abdomen and adjacent to the small intestine. It breaks down protein, carbohydrates and fat using digestive enzymes. The pancreas also regulates blood sugar levels in the human body as well as neutralizes stomach acids. The pancreas is actually both a gland and an organ because it does produce several important hormones including insulin, and glucagon. The pancreas was first identified by the Greek surgeon Herophilus, but was not given its official name until a few hundred years later when it was named by another Greek surgeon name Ruphos.

Pancreatitis often precedes the formation of a pancreatic cyst or cysts. Pancreatitis is a painful condition that causes the pancreas to digest itself because the pancreas enzymes start digesting too soon. If untreated long enough an inflamed pancreas can cause irreversible damage to the pancreas and surrounding areas of the body. Drinking too much alcohol is a major factor in the formation of a pancreatic cyst so it behooves the person suffering from symptoms to stop alcohol consumption immediately.

Most cysts are detected by an ultrasound, CT scan or and MRI. Many times, if a pancreatic cyst is found, the doctor will order an endoscopic ultrasound so that fluid from the pancreatic cyst can be found.

There are several different types of cysts that reside within or on the pancreas. The location of the pancreatic cyst, as well as the age and sex of the patient helps to determine what type of cyst it is. Most pancreatic cysts are not harmful and can easily be treated.

Many times no treatment is required or a simple draining of the cyst is all that needs to be done. In extreme cases surgery can be done to remove the cyst. Once the pancreatic cyst is removed there is little chance it will come back.

It is important to be aware of what is going with your health and when experiencing symptoms of pancreas problems careful attention is necessary to understand and investigate the problem

Many of the symptoms are the same whether you experience an inflamed pancreas or pancreas tumor

Most people get alarmed when they experience pain in the abdomen associated with symptoms of pancreas problems and automatically think it is cancer, however cancer of the pancreas can bring about its own set of symptoms

The only sure sign of diagnosis is to have the pancreas enzymes examined and tested to accurately identify what your symptoms mean

Below is a list of 7 symptoms of pancreas problems related to an inflamed pancreas, pancreas tumor and even cancer of the pancreas. This information is important and should not be overlooked when experiencing any of the following symptoms.

1.	Yellow tint to skin and eyes

A yellow tint to your skin and eyes could indicate jaundice, especially if accompanied with skin itching. Jaundice can be related to gallstones, liver problems, hepatitis and most commonly cancer. In the event that you experience jaundice associated with pancreas problems, it is necessary to have diagnostic testing done right away as cancer of the pancreas can spread into the lymph nodes quickly.

2.	Loss of weight and appetite

This symptom is difficult to rule as to which pancreas problem you may be experiencing. An inflamed pancreas can cause you to not want to eat anything but liquid foods such as broth or gelatin, in which case you are bound to lose weight. Cancer of the pancreas can also cause significant weight loss and it is best to be seen by a healthcare professional so that your pancreas enzymes can be examined.

3.	Nausea and vomiting

One of the more common symptoms of pancreas problems is nausea and vomiting. When a person has a pancreas tumor this can cause a loss of appetite and nausea. Also the person may vomit when they eat depending on the location of the tumor. An inflamed pancreas can also cause an upset stomach. If symptoms persist it is wise to have testing done by your physician.

4.	Diarrhea

Diarrhea could be a sign that your pancreas enzymes are insufficient. The insufficiency can cause diarrhea. Weight loss is usually accompanied by the diarrhea and is one of the more common symptoms of pancreas problems. If the diarrhea is prolonged you should visit your health care professional to alleviate dehydration.

5.	Dull pain in upper abdomen

Dull pain in the upper abdomen can be a result of pancreatic cancer. Cancer of the pancreas results in abdominal pain accompanied with yellow skin tint or jaundice.

6.	Mood changes and depression

As with any pancreas problems, the pain or overall symptoms can cause your mood to change and depression set in. If you are feeling overwhelmed it is important to inform your doctor so that he or she can provide the support you need.

7.	Fatigue

As with any symptoms of pancreas problems, fatigue can occur because your body is working overtime to heal itself. Ample rest is required but should not be ignored. If you do not feel like yourself and fatigue is taking over, it is important to see your physician right away.

Even in the case of salmonella gastroenteritis can a person deal effectively

Below is a list of seven ways to deal with norovirus gastroenteritis. Although this illness is not without its problems, there are ways to make it less impactful and speed up the healing process.

1.	Rest in bed

The key to getting over the stomach flu quicker is rest. Your body is under attack and rest is a useful weapon in the arsenal. Most likely you will feel like you need to rest and that feeling should not be ignored when dealing with acute gastroenteritis. Rest will help to relieve the symptoms of norovirus gastroenteritis as your body needs time to heal. Try to avoid your daily routine and if possible, stay home from work or public places so that you do not pass the virus on to someone else. Infectious gastroenteritis is just that, infectious.

2.	Drink plenty of fluids

When suffering from the stomach flu, dehydration is a high possibility. Mild dehydration can be alleviated by drinking small amounts of liquid if you can keep them down. Chronic gastroenteritis can cause severe dehydration in which case you may need to seek medical care for intravenous liquids. Chewing on ice chips and sipping on small amounts of liquid can prove beneficial when dealing with symptoms of norovirus gastroenteritis.

3.	Take medication for fever relief

The only medication that can really help in dealing with acute gastroenteritis or chronic gastroenteritis is aspirin or some sort of fever relief. Antibiotics do not help in battling this virus. A fever reducer can make you feel more comfortable and able to rest longer, which is what your body needs to get well.

4.	Avoid dairy products

When suffering from the stomach flu it is wise to avoid consuming dairy products. Dairy products, like milk, are hard on the stomach and can cause additional upset, nausea or vomiting. Stick to ice, water and tea. Salmonella gastroenteritis can cause a strong aversion to dairy products and you should listen to your body when it reacts against these rich foods.

5.	Avoid caffeine and alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol can weaken the immune system and cause the illness to prolong. Alcohol and caffeine should be avoided when dealing with symptoms of infectious gastroenteritis.

6.	Reintroduce food gradually

It is important to gradually introduce food back into your system to avoid nausea and vomiting. Slowly see what your body can handle, especially when getting over salmonella gastroenteritis. Stick with easy to digest foods like chicken broth, bananas, applesauce or toast.

7.	Seek medical care

As with any case of norovirus gastroenteritis it is important to contact your family physician or urgent care if symptoms persist. This will help you avoid dehydration or worse yet.

At times, symptoms of polyps may be similar to that of the symptoms of gallstones. Polyps can be taken care of and there are several things that can be done if you or your loved one has been diagnosed with gallbladder polyps

What may seem like a blocked bile duct, can in fact be an outburst of polyps. This article will address what you can do if you have been diagnosed with gallbladder polyps

If you have been diagnosed with gallbladder polyps there are several things you can do. You do not have to simply stop your life and forget about living.

Most gallbladder polyps are small and size does matter. The odds of cancer are much greater the larger the size of the polyp. Gallbladder polyps are usually less than one centimeter and in almost all cases are benign or non-cancerous. Benign polyps require no treatment but doctors may schedule routine visits to examine the size and malignancy in the future. For the most part, unless they grow at increased rates, there is nothing to worry about. If the polyp is accompanied with symptoms of gallstones it is wise to have your doctor look into this more as gallbladder inflammation may occur.

Polyps residing in the gallbladder usually do not pose any problems or symptoms of gallstones, however further examination may be required. It is often difficult for a doctor to pinpoint the type of polyp and relies primarily on the patient’s symptoms. If the patient does have symptoms of gallstones, the doctor may need to look further to rule out bile duct disease or even a blocked bile duct. Treatment decisions will need to be made if the doctor suspects problems.

A patient suffering from gallbladder polyps with gallbladder inflammation may along with their doctor opt for surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is one of the more popular choices because it is safe and effective in treating and preventing bile duct disease. This surgery can be done on an outpatient basis and does not require a long hospital stay. The patient is in and out of surgery. Since this type of surgery is not open and invasive, there are fewer risks associated with the treatment of gallbladder polyps. Complications, such as a blocked bile duct can also be greatly reduced.

Open surgery for the treatment of gallbladder polyps is an option and some doctors may require this be done due in part to the type and severity of the polyps. If a patient has had scar tissue from previous surgeries, open surgery is necessary. Open surgery may also be recommended if the patient has suffered from a blocked bile duct in the past or had severe infection resulting in bile duct disease.

Whatever you decide, there are options and your medical health professional will assist you in making the decision that is right for you. Remember that if you have been diagnosed with gallbladder polyps you still have a choice in your care and outcome.

Below is a list of natural remedies for gallbladder inflammation that can be initiated at home before major symptoms of gallstones occur.

1.	Pears

Gallbladder inflammation can be treated naturally through the use of pears. Eating pears or drinking pear juice several times a day can relieve symptoms of gallstones or those symptoms of pain related to a blocked bile duct.

2.	Beets

Beet juice cleanses the gallbladder and is great when a patient has a blocked bile duct. Drinking approximately 100 ml of beet juice twice daily will help to eliminate gallbladder inflammation.

3.	Olive Oil

Natural olive oil that is raw and unrefined has been a proponent in the natural remedies of the removal of gallstones. Approximately 30 ml of olive oil should be taken upon waking in the morning. You may choose to immediately follow the olive oil with about 100 ml of lemon juice or grapefruit juice. This morning cocktail should be taken every morning for weeks if necessary to eliminate and relieve any symptoms of gallstones.

4.	Sunflower Oil

Similar to the olive oil concoction, sunflower oil that is raw and unrefined is a natural remedy for gallbladder inflammation. The same amount of sunflower oil can be taken as in the olive oil recipe.

5.	Dandelion

Drinking approximately 125 ml of dandelion juice daily can prevent bile duct cancer symptoms from occurring. In the event that a patient experiences gallbladder polyps and associated symptoms, dandelion juice mixed with watercress can prove to be beneficial.

6.	Chicory

Chicory seeds, roots and flowers can be ground and consumed as a juice. This juice is good for the liver and other organs associated with the secretion of bile. A patient with bile duct cancer symptoms should drink chicory daily.

7.	Carrots

Carrot juice cleanses the gallbladder and is great when a patient has a blocked bile duct. Drinking approximately 100 ml of carrot juice twice daily will help to eliminate gallbladder inflammation.

8.	Warm-water enema

Warm-water enemas at body temperature can help to remove fecal material that can cause a blocked bile duct.

9.	Old-fashioned exercise

Exercise gets your body moving and circulation flowing. In order to prevent blockages from occurring, physical exercise can prove to be beneficial.

10.	Hot packs

Gall bladder polyps can cause pain and by placing hot packs on affected areas can relieve some of the pain and tenderness caused by gallbladder inflammation. Hot packs can be applied to the back region as well as the upper abdominal region.

Medical attention is required if you experience symptoms of eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Although rare, this condition can be very serious and requires medical attention

Below are some common symptoms related to gastroenteritis. As always, seek medical care if you experience any one symptom for more than 24-48 hours

Common symptoms of gastroenteritis include the following:

1.	Diarrhea

One of the more common symptoms of gastroenteritis is diarrhea. Mid to moderate level diarrhea for 24 to 48 hours is also common among most types of gastroenteritis including infectious gastroenteritis. Chronic diarrhea is also possible in which case medical attention is required due eliminate dehydration.

2.	Abdominal pain and cramps

Other symptoms of gastroenteritis include abdominal pain and cramping, and at times are severe. Acute gastroenteritis can result in a severe and sudden onset of stomach pain as well as chronic diarrhea.

3.	Nausea

Nausea and stomach upset is common when discussing the many symptoms of gastroenteritis. Nausea results in most all types of gastroenteritis including the rare eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Nausea with or without vomiting can occur.

4.	Vomiting

Vomiting, whether suddenly or as a result of built up abdominal pain and nausea, can occur in patients suffering from chronic gastroenteritis. If vomiting occurs for more than 48 hours medical attention is necessary to prevent dehydration. Vomiting is one of the more common symptoms of gastroenteritis and can oftentimes be mistaken for the flu or food poisoning. As with any symptom, if prolonged, have yourself checked by a health care professional.

5.	Fever

Common symptoms of gastroenteritis include a low grade fever of 100 degrees or less. More serious symptoms of gastroenteritis include a fever of over 101 degrees. A spike in temperature may occur as a result of acute gastroenteritis. Medical care is required when a high temperature continues for more than 48 hours to prevent dehydration.

6.	Blood in vomit or stool

Blood in vomit or stool can indicate something more serious and can at times occur with infectious gastroenteritis. Medical attention is required for further assessment.

7.	Swollen abdomen

A swollen abdomen is a common symptom of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, a rare form of gastroenteritis that is poorly understood. The infection affects the digestive system and stomach as well as the intestines and elevated eosinophils are located in the blood. Medical attention is highly recommended as the condition can be life-threatening.

8.	Dehydration

Chronic gastroenteritis can bring with it chronic symptoms, including prolonged diarrhea, vomiting and an elevated fever for days. If this happens your body is prone to dehydration and medical care is required to push fluids intravenously. Symptoms of dehydration include weakness of the limbs, lightheadedness, dry skin and mouth, a lack of sweat and tears and decreased urination ability.

Simply put, cholecystitis is the inflammation of your gallbladder. More specifically this condition is the inflammation of the wall of your gallbladder and adjacent gallbladder lining

There are several types and symptoms of cholecystitis. There are also a range of cholecystitis treatment options available, both natural and medical

If you have experienced symptoms relating to acute cholecystitis or emphysematous cholectystitis there is hope

Patients with both acalculus cholecystitis and calculous cholecystitis have options on treatment as the symptoms vary

Below is a list of the various types of cholecystitis and corresponding symptoms and treatment options

1)	Acute Cholecystitis

Symptoms – Signs and symptoms of acute cholecystitis include a sudden attack of severe and constant pain usually in the upper abdomen region. Most all patients with symptoms of cholecystitis in this fashion experience gallstones.

Treatment – Hospitalization is recommended and oftentimes required. Surgery and removal of the gallbladder is normally done within the first 24 to 48 hours of the attack and hospitalization. If the patient suffers from kidney or liver issues, surgery may be prolonged for up to six weeks.

2)	Acalculus Cholecystitis

Symptoms – Acalculus cholecystits is more rare than acute but similar in nature. With acalculus there are usually no gallstones formed but still severe and constant pain in the upper abdomen region.

Treatment – Major surgery is almost always required with acalculus cholecystitis treatment. Fasting for prolonged periods of time is necessary and intravenous feedings are necessary as well for lengthened amounts of time. A deficiency in the immune system can occur and care is often needed for this symptom. Almost 100% of the time, patients with acalculus cholecystitis require immediate surgery to remove the diseased gallbladder.

3)	Calculous Cholecystitis

Symptoms – Similar to the other types of cholecystitis, calculous cholecystitis causes pain in the abdominal region that can radiate into the back and shoulder blade area.

Treatment – Gallbladder surgery is required. In all cases the diseased gallbladder is removed right away and hospitalization is necessary in case of further infection. Cholecystitis treatment must take place in a hospital and under medical supervision. A simple diet change is not enough. The gallbladder must be removed due to the spread of infection. Fasting for prolonged periods of time is necessary and intravenous feedings are required as well for lengthened amounts of time. A deficiency in the immune system can occur and additional medical care is often needed.

4)	Emphysematous Cholecystitis

Symptoms – Emphysematous cholecystitis is less common than many gallbladder issues. Symptoms of cholecystitis occur when there is a sudden infection onset of the gallbladder that is caused by gas forming micro-organisms. Gallstones are oftentimes present and there may even be an impaction of the gallstones.
