Steroids have been talked about a lot, especially anabolic steroids, and this is mainly because of the damaging effect that these drugs can have on your body. Steroids can be broken down into three basic classes, and these classes are corticosteroids, female sex hormones, called estrogen amd progesterone, and male sex hormones called androgens, and this includes testosterone. What is the difference between these types of steroids, and how does each type affect the human body?

Corticosteroids are steroids that are prescribed by a doctor to treat inflammation in a specific part of your body or a specific system. Sometimes these are prescribed for lupus or for asthma, to reduce swelling and ease the symptoms which are happening. These steroids are not the dangerous type which bodybuilders and athletes use to bulk up, which are called anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids include cortisone, which can be used as a topical agent to soothe and help heal your skin while stopping and preventing itching.

The female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone are also steroids, and these hormones are used in birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraceptive medications. These steroids control the reproductive organs and menstrual cycles for women. These hormones affect the body in every aspect concerning the reproductive organs and processes.

The third type of steroids are androgens, and this is the class that anabolic steroids belongs in. Testosterone is one androgen, but there are also others. These steroids may be legally prescribed for certain medical circumstances or conditions, including female breast cancer, growth stimulation, weight gain, red blood cell production, and for natural deficiencies in this steroid. Treatments for cancer and certain surgeries may cause muscle loss, and anabolic steroids can help reverse this condition by causing rapid muscle growth. Even when they are medically indicated, caution must be used with anabolic steroids because of the serious side effects and damage these drugs can do.

Anabolic steroids have become a popular drug for athletes and others in high school and college, as well as with professional bodybuilders, because they are not aware of the high risk level and the dangers. Anabolic steroids increase the amount of testosterone in the blood, and this will stimulate the muscle tissue in the body to grow bigger and more powerful. Steroid abuse can cause too much of this substance to flow into the bloodstream, and can cause damage that may not appear for years. Teenagers can experience stunted growth patterns, and all users may develop liver tumors, an increase in aggression, frustration, and violence, acne, heart muscles that become too large, hair loss, muscle aches, heart disease and more. In some cases, anabolic steroid use can cause your muscles to grow too fast, and this can lead to a weakened muscle, tendon, and bone structure. Another common side effect of steroids is infertility in both men and women, as well as impotence in men.

The serious dangers that anabolic steroids pose have prompted many schools and athletic teams and associations to start drug testing specifically for these substances, and this includes the olympic teams. Steroids are dangerous and illegal unless prescribed by a physician, and even then these drugs should only be prescribed for a short period of time to prevent any harmful medical effects and results. All of the steroid types have uses, but anabolic steroids must be used very cautiously, and only for good medical reasons.

It has been reported in the press that many medical practitioners prescribe a placebo for their patients. In the normal course, the placebo is a fairly uncontroversial medication, for example a pain reliever, although the patient may be told that it has other medicinal properties. Medical practitioners who were questioned as part of some research into the use of placebos as medical treatment said that they thought the practice of giving a placebo was both effective and ethical.

679 rheumatologists and primary-care doctors were surveyed. They primarily treated arthritis, and as many as half of them said that they prescribed a placebo 2 to 3 times each month. They also said that they did not specify to the patient that they were being given a placebo.

The “placebo cure” or “placebo effect” is a benefit to health which is triggered by psychological expectations of an improvement which is not directly attributable to the physical effect of the medicine that has been prescribed. A placebo may be particularly effective and more ethically acceptable where a more normal treatment may not be suitable.

British doctors were surveyed regarding the prescription of placebos, and the results were recorded in the pre-eminent British Medical Journal. Over 60 per cent of those doctors surveyed said that giving a patient a placebo was ethically sound. However, the American Medical Association has ruled that it is unethical to prescribe a placebo to a patient without explicitly telling them. Dr Jon Tilburt, previously of the National Institute of Health where the survey was carried out, said that the prescription of placebos was a practice that was previously more common and in keeping with a past era of more “paternalistic” medicine. He said that there is a residual feeling that doctors want to promote health and healing through psychological expectations that can be triggered by the use of placebo.

Although most people associate placebos with the sugar pills that are sometimes used in drug research studies, it was found that doctors who provided their patients with placebos rarely prescribed sugar pills. Rather, they tended to prescribe relatively harmless medications such as pain relief that would be available over the counter, or vitamins. Placebos are used in medical research to test the effects of certain drugs and treatments. In a clinical study, one group of patients will be given a placebo (such as a sugar pill) while the other group will receive the drug being tested. The comparative effect of the drug can then be tested.

13 percent of medical practitioners who admitted the use of placebos, said that they often prescribed a sedative. A similar amount of doctors said that they often prescribed an antibiotic. However, prescribing these drugs without telling the patient brings more difficult ethical considerations. Sedatives tend to have side effects, while the overuse of antibiotics is blamed for the increase in the amount and types of germs that are unresponsive to antibiotic treatment.

Research has shown that prescribing a placebo can in some cases bring about genuine health improvements. The health benefits are triggered by a patient’s expectation that the “medicine” will be helpful to them and their particular condition. The AMA, which is the biggest U.S. doctors’ association, has asserted that practitioners may only use a placebo in circumstances where the patient is told, and fully agrees. They have said that to do otherwise would put the patient-doctor relationship of trust at risk, which may ultimately lead to further harm to the patient.

Shocking evidence in recent surveys shows that a majority of extreme sports athletes on taking steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Cases of doping are so widespread that athletes cant be competitive without them. One extreme sports athlete, who asked to remain anonymous, stated that “I don’t know of any athletes who aren’t on dope. The intensity of the sport revolves around pure strength, endurance and power.”

Some sports, such as skateboarding, dont have the same level of doping issues as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Agencies such as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulate most worldwide sports but extreme sports seem to fall outside the enforcement of their code. While doping occurs in most sports, regulated or not, regulation at least confines it to a less widespread issue.

According to an informal survey of 312 athletes, 66.3% responded that at some point they have tried steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. These numbers represent individuals who participate in Skateboarding, BMX, Extreme Skiing, Mixed Martial Arts and a variety of other sports that our participants represented. Surprisingly 91.7% of those who were in MMA, about 66% of the surveyed population, admitted that they have doped while only 18.4% of Skateboarders, about 16% of those surveyed, said they have tried performance enhancing drugs. Other sports like BMX, approximately 9% of respondants, fell in the middle of the statistical breakdown at 22.8%.

Out of the 91.7% of MMA athletes that admitted taking performance enhancing drugs, 79.3% said that they used some form of steroids to increase muscle mass and size. Amphetamines seemed to be the second most common response with 10.2%. These results are shocking since while many people expected some use of these performance enhancing drugs, they did no know it was at to this extent.

This survey was directed to extreme sports athletes and so only the 312 respondents were counted in these statistics. In their additional comments, 162 people, or 48%, wrote that steroids and other performance enhancing drugs should be made legal since it is so common. No matter how you look at the numbers they are shocking and revealing and relate the sentiment of the athletes themselves.
