A common question asked of doctors is can you take too much vitamin C? Vitamin C is the most common antioxidant taken by people but mega doses can be harmful. Too much vitamin C can cause nausea, diarrhea, and kidney stones. The human body absorbs the amount of C it needs and the rest ends up in the body’s urine. It is pretty difficult to take too much vitamin C.

One of the antioxidant and disease fighting properties that vitamin C and food sources of vitamin C have is the ability to fight against symptoms of HPV. The HPV virus is the widest spread sexually transmitted disease that causes warts and some forms of cancer such as anal, cervical, and penile. Taking a multivitamin with vitamin C in it also resulted in lower infections rates.

There are currently two HPV vaccines: Gardasil and Cervarix which have lead many people to ask which HPV vaccine to use: Gardasil or Cervarix? Cervarix vaccinates against 2 types of HPV while Gardasil vaccinates against 4 types, but the Gardasil controversy caused by the serious side effects has people switching to Cervarix. The Gardasil controversy stems from a reported 32 deaths that stem from the vaccine. Other serious side effects reported are seizures, blood clots, and fainting.

Even if you don’t know which vaccine to use: Gardasil or Cervarix, taking a vitamin C supplement, eating foods that are sources of vitamin C, and taking a multivitamin tablet can help ward off persistent infections of HPV. So if you’re one of the millions of people out there trying to decide which HPV vaccine to use: Gardasil or Cervarix, it is also helpful to take vitamin C to lower infection rates.

Probiotics are microorganisms, such as acidophilus, that increase the overall health of the people who eat or drink them. They increase the number of good bacteria that live in our intestines, and prevent the growth of the bacteria that can harm the body.

Antibiotics kill not only the bad bacteria in the body, but they, also, kill a lot of the good bacteria. Stress, immunizations, traveling and a change in diet can cause a change in the ratio of the good bacteria to the bad.

You can give probiotics to kids of any age. Children will benefit from taking probiotics because the probiotics help keep their digestive system and their immune system healthy. They, also, help nutrients digest and absorb better.

Studies have shown that probiotics are especially useful in children that have acute diarrhea and babies that have colic. Giving probiotics to kids can help their immune system when they have symptoms of flu or a cold. They, also, help with allergies, acne and digestive diseases, such as Chrohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Prebiotics in the body come from carbohydrate fibers that don’t digest. They remain in the body, and help the good bacteria flourish and grow.

There are no herbal benefits of probiotics. However, herbal products can be used in conjunction with probiotics and prebiotics to boost the immune system and fight against certain diseases.

In light of the above facts, it is safe to say, yes, you can give probiotics to kids. Their immune systems will be healthier, and their bodies will be able to fight off any bacteria or virus that they come in contact with.

Sometimes eating a healthy, well-rounded diet isn’t always enough to provide all the nutrients a woman’s body needs every day. A women’s multivitamin tablet fills these gaps, making sure that your body gets what it needs to stay healthy. However, it can be confusing to know what to look for in a womens multivitamin. Read on for some important guidelines.

If you are still menstruating, your body likely needs more iron. Also, since women are more prone to osteoporosis than men, a woman’s multivitamin often includes extra calcium. Postmenopausal women need less iron and vitamin K, but more B12 and vitamin D. If you’re pregnant or nursing, you’ll want extra folic acid, iron, and calcium in your tablet.

Other than these special cases, what to look for in a womens multivitamin is much the same as a regular multivitamin. You want a variety of water and fat-soluble vitamins – vitamin C, A, D, K, E, and the B group — as well as minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc. Many multivitamins now include antioxidants, too.

Make sure the multivitamin tablet bottle you choose won’t expire before you’ll use them all, and check the daily value (DV) percentages, as more is not always better and can actually be harmful to have over 100 percent DV of any vitamin or mineral. Also, check the label for any allergens. You don’t want to have an allergic reaction to traces of wheat in your multivitamin. Finally, look for the Unites States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal, which assures you that the supplement has been tested and actually contains the amounts of vitamins and minerals listed. These are some of the things you want to consider when thinking about what to look for in a multivitamin.

Though the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need is by eating a healthy, well-rounded diet, it can sometimes be hard to fit in the optimum amount of nutrients. This is where a multivitamin tablet comes in. It fills in the gaps and ensures you receive the vitamins and minerals your body needs for peak performance.

Here’s an idea of what to look for in a multivitamin. The exact composition will vary depending on whether you need one tailored to male or female nutritional requirements, as well as your stage of life (prenatal, youth, menopause, seniors, etc.). Most will contain water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C and the B vitamins; fat-soluble ones including A, D, K, and a vitamin E supplement, and minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, and more. Some may also include antioxidants.

For women of childbearing age, what to look for in a multivitamin may include extra iron and calcium. If you’re an older adult, look for a formula with less iron and vitamin K and more B12 and vitamin D. Multivitamins designed for pregnant and nursing women pack in extra folic acid, iron, and calcium.

Finally, here are some specifics on what to look for in a multivitamin of any sort. Choose one with a good variety, and double-check the expiration date. If you have allergies, make sure it doesn’t include any allergens (egg, wheat, etc.). Don’t get one that has more than 100 percent daily value of any vitamin or mineral. So, a good multivitamin tablet might contian vitamin c or a good vitamin e supplement. And always remember that more is not always better!

Iodine deficiency is most common in underdeveloped countries, due to the addition of iodine to most table salt in the United States and other developed nations. However, it is not a chemical produced by the body, so if you don’t get sufficient amounts through diet or supplementation, you may be at risk for iodine deficiency disorder.

All symptoms of iodine deficiency relate to its effects on the thyroid—iodine is a critical part of the chemical makeup of thyroid hormones. The thyroid grows progressively larger (develops a “goiter”) without enough iodine, and people with a large goiter may have trouble swallowing and breathing, and even feel like they’re choking when lying down.

Hypothyroidism is also possible as iodine levels in the body fall, since iodine is necessary to make thyroid hormones. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include feeling cold, tiring easily, dry skin, constipation, forgetfulness and depression.

Iodine deficiency disorder during pregnancy shows up in children as mental retardation and growth, hearing, and speech problems. Mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy is more common in the U.S., and has been linked with low intelligence in children.

Iodine levels are usually measured across populations, not in individuals. Amounts of iodine are tested through urine samples. If you are concerned about the possibility of iodine deficiency in yourself or your children, ask your doctor about doing an iodine deficiency test. Make sure the salt you use is iodized, and if necessary, pick up an iodine supplement at your local pharmacy.

Just about every molecule of the human body depends on vitamin B6 for production

Certain medications will deplete your vitamin B6 supply. Pyridoxine tablets or pyridoxine vitamins may be in order if that is the case

The processing of pyridoxine is complex as it supports our metabolism behind the scenes of several other funcrtions

Pyridoxine vitamin, or Vitamin B6, is essential as an amino acid absorption supplement. The pyridoxine vitamin, vitamin B6, is also essential for metabolism, transport, and the growth and formation of red blood cells. It controls the utilization of several substances needed by the nervous systems. Nervousness, weakness, and irritability are all signs of a vitamin B6 deficiency.

Vitamin B6 is a component of coenzyme PLP which metabolizes amino acids. Since it has the ability to transfer the amino acid, the body will then create nonessential amino acids from the amino groups and metabolize protein and urea. Pyridoxine participates in over 100 enzyme reactions which includes protein metabolism. Both the nervous system and the immune system need vitamin B6 to properly function. Vitamin B6, pyridoxine, will also assist in maintaining blood glucose in a normal range. If calorie intake is low, the body will need vitamin B6 to convert the stored carbohydrates or other nutrients into glucose to maintain sugar levels at a normal range. The thymus, spleen and lymph nodes which make our white blood cells are also maintained by vitamin B6.

The main function of vitamin B6 is its involvement with over 100 enzymatic reactions. The function of B6 is far reached and diverse. Almost every molecule depends on B6 for their production. Foods high in vitamin B6 will give support to the nervous system. The breakdown of sugar and starches will be promoted. Homocysteine will be prevented from build-up in the blood. If your body is in need of vitamin B6 foods, or pyridoxine tablets, you will feel fatigued. You may also suffer from anemia or skin disorders which would include eczema and seborrheic dermatitis.

Another key function of vitamin B6 is its effect on the nervous system. When severely deficient of B6, nerve related symptoms like convulsions and seizures may occur. Vitamin B6 is critical to the forming of red blood cells. With deficiency, symptoms of anemia, fatigue, and malaise may be suffered. Certain medications will cause a depletion of vitamin B6. Also, excessive alcohol use will lower vitamin B6 levels. Pyridoxine tablets should be considered if medication depleted vitamin B6 is in need of supplementation.

Just as there are deficiencies with pyridoxine, there may also be occurrences of toxicity from too much of the vitamin B6. The use of high amounts of pyridoxine has some risks for certain individuals. Adults may suffer from progressive sensory neuropathy or degeneration of dorsal root ganglia.

There are several types of foods which have some source of vitamin B6. Great sources of vitamin B6 are 100 percent fortified cereals, bell peppers, turnip greens and spinach. Other sources include garlic, tuna, cauliflower, banana, celery, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cod, mustard greens,

Although the process is more complex, vitamin B6 will help with metabolism. Pyridoxine is, vitamin B6, is more or less, working behind the scenes, however. It cannot be stated that vitamin B6 speeds up metabolism with a welcomed side effect of weight loss. This vitamin is important as a co-factor for pertinent enzymatic reactions in metabolism. Vitamin B6 is found in many foods and can be taken as pyridoxine tablet or vitamin supplements.

Flax seed, an omega-3 antioxidant, is believed to be an even better cancer fighter than soy

An important antioxidant, an omega-3 fatty acid called alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is found in several vegetable oils and few fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and more. Linoleic acid foods, a linoleic acid structure composing omega-6 fatty acids, consists of a larger variety of nuts and seeds, grains, fruits, vegetables, and more. Alpha linolenic acid has had many claims of being heart healthy. As antioxidants, alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid foods, are now being claimed to fight various cancers. Unlike certain fats which may promote cancer since they are saturated and boost hormones, alpha linolenic acids are considered to be good essential fats which will protect against cancer.

According to the chemical and physical structure of fatty acids, the linoleic acid structure and the alpha linolenic structure will determine the difference between an omega 3 fatty acid and an omega 6 fatty acid.

One of the greatest sources of omega-3 fats are lignans found in flax seeds. According to a 2002 study done at University of Toronto, lignans will reduce tumor growth rate and prevent metastasis by at least 45%. Flax seeds are a strong source of phytoestrogen, a cancer protecting nutrient. Flax seed is believed to be a stronger cancer fighter than that of soy products. Diets low in fat, but made up of good fats, have a tendency to decrease circulating testosterone and estrogen in the blood stream. Low fat diets will drop estrogen levels in the blood stream by fifteen to fifty percent within a few weeks. Since the hormones aid in promoting cancer, decreasing the circulation of them will reduce the risk of cancer. Not only are these fats believed to prevent some kinds of cancer, the omega 3 fatty acids are known to decrease risk of arrhythmias, lower triglyceride levels, slightly lower blood pressure, and decrease the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque which will block the arteries.

Because of the benefits and risks of good fats and bad fats, replacing the bad with the good should be considered. Adding monounsaturated fats to your diet would be a healthy choice. This would include adding olive oils, fish, nuts, fish oils, and flax. Sprinkling ground flax seeds on your morning cereal, or on your dinner salad will aid in reducing threatening hormones in the diet. This will also balance estrogen and testosterone levels as well. Omega 3s found in seeds, nuts, oils, and cold water fish should be included in your diet. People with low levels of omega 3 in the tissues and blood have been shown to correspond with some cancers including breast cancer.

Saturated and monounsaturated fats are not needed in our diets. These fats are made in the human body. However, linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acids are not self produced and can only be provided by diet. Recommended sources of these antioxidants are from soybeans, canola, walnuts, flaxseeds, and their oils. It is suggested that fish, especially fatty fish, should be eaten at least two times a week. Fatty types of fish include mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, salmon, and albacore tuna. If enough omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are not obtained by diet alone, linolenic acid supplements are also available for further protection against heart disease and various cancers.

Steroids can be broken down into three basic classes, and these classes are corticosteroids, female sex hormones, called estrogen amd progesterone, and male sex hormones called androgens, and this includes testosterone. What is the difference between these types of steroids, and how does each type affect the human body?

Corticosteroids are steroids that are prescribed by a doctor to treat inflammation in a specific part of your body or a specific system. Sometimes these are prescribed for lupus or for asthma, to reduce swelling and ease the symptoms which are happening. These steroids are not the dangerous type which bodybuilders and athletes use to bulk up, which are called anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids include cortisone, which can be used as a topical agent to soothe and help heal your skin while stopping and preventing itching.

The female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone are also steroids, and these hormones are used in birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraceptive medications. These steroids control the reproductive organs and menstrual cycles for women. These hormones affect the body in every aspect concerning the reproductive organs and processes.

The third type of steroids are androgens, and this is the class that anabolic steroids belongs in. Testosterone is one androgen, but there are also others. These steroids may be legally prescribed for certain medical circumstances or conditions, including female breast cancer, growth stimulation, weight gain, red blood cell production, and for natural deficiencies in this steroid. Treatments for cancer and certain surgeries may cause muscle loss, and anabolic steroids can help reverse this condition by causing rapid muscle growth. Even when they are medically indicated, caution must be used with anabolic steroids because of the serious side effects and damage these drugs can do.

Anabolic steroids have become a popular drug for athletes and others in high school and college, as well as with professional bodybuilders, because they are not aware of the high risk level and the dangers. Anabolic steroids increase the amount of testosterone in the blood, and this will stimulate the muscle tissue in the body to grow bigger and more powerful. Steroid abuse can cause too much of this substance to flow into the bloodstream, and can cause damage that may not appear for years. Teenagers can experience stunted growth patterns, and all users may develop liver tumors, an increase in aggression, frustration, and violence, acne, heart muscles that become too large, hair loss, muscle aches, heart disease and more. In some cases, anabolic steroid use can cause your muscles to grow too fast, and this can lead to a weakened muscle, tendon, and bone structure. Another common side effect of steroids is infertility in both men and women, as well as impotence in men.

The serious dangers that anabolic steroids pose have prompted many schools and athletic teams and associations to start drug testing specifically for these substances, and this includes the olympic teams. Steroids are dangerous and illegal unless prescribed by a physician, and even then these drugs should only be prescribed for a short period of time to prevent any harmful medical effects and results. All of the steroid types have uses, but anabolic steroids must be used very cautiously, and only for good medical reasons.

Manganese plays an important role in a person’s good health

Manganese can be an effective natural arthritis remedy, but it can also be important for arthritis prevention

Not only can manganese deficiency be involved in arthritis, but it can have serious effects on overall health

There are only approximately 10 milligrams of manganese in the human body. Much of it resides in the bones, kidneys, and liver. Despite the small quantities, this mineral has been linked with general health in entire systems of the body, such as the skeletal system causing many to acknowledge its potential in an effective arthritis prevention plan.

A number of organs and processes also depend on adequate amounts of manganese being present in the body. There are serious problems that are associated with both deficiencies and too much manganese and high levels can result in toxicity. Among the most common symptoms of manganese toxicity is interference with process of absorbing iron and a resulting iron-deficiency and possible anemia.

Overall Health

Manganese plays a role in the healthy growth of the skeleton and in the building of cartilage. Manganese helps in the formation of connective tissue and bone. Combining manganese with chondroitin can also help to reduce some symptoms of existing osteoarthritis. Manganese is essential for a number of metabolic processes including the utilization of glucose, lipid synthesis, lipid and cholesterol metabolism. It also activates enzyme functions.

Manganese plays a role in the metabolism of protein and nucleic acid, plus it is needed for the healthy function of pancreatic function and development. It is important in the prevention of sterility. Manganese is also involved with the thyroid. Many of these are essential for good overall health and continued difficulties can lead to chronic problems in some cases.

Skeletal System

Manganese plays a role in normal skeletal growth and development including the building of cartilage resulting in the acknowledgement of its useful role in a natural arthritis remedy treatment. Without a sufficient quantity of manganese various problems can develop directly related to the skeletal system and some indirectly related problems may rise. One significant difficulty with unhealthy development of the skeletal system is the potential for permanent damage. Manganese helps in the healthy formation of connective tissue and bone.

The healthy development of the skeletal system and the continued presence of the necessary minerals and other elements for skeletal health coupled with exercise can help ensure that your health lasts, establishing it as a good start for arthritis prevention. Combining manganese with chondroitin can also help to reduce some symptoms of existing osteoarthritis, making it a useful supplement to help correct the problems of existing health problems including being considered a natural arthritis remedy.

Deficiency Symptoms

The symptoms of manganese deficiency may vary from individual to individual and depend on the severity of the deficiency. Among the more noted are ataxia, which is the loss of coordination of muscles especially the extremities. Another is fainting and/or a loss of muscle strength, technically termed myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis in this case results from inadequate choline utilization. This causes a reduced synthesis of acetylcholine which then causes the loss of muscle strength. One of the more seemingly natural symptoms is hearing loss. The individual may also have weakened ligaments and tendons.

Manganese deficiency has been linked to diabetes as a potential cause because a lack of manganese may reduce the production of insulin in the body.

Some studies suggest Sudden Infant Death Syndrome may also be caused by insufficient levels of this vitamin

The role of thiamin, otherwise known as vitamin B1 in carbohydrate metabolism has long been established. That vitamin B1 plays a critical role in the metabolism of energy is widely recognized in research circles. It is a water soluble vitamin and passes through the body daily thus necessitating daily intakes. The presence of vitamin B1 enables the body to utilize carbohydrates for energy and it is also useful in metabolizing amino acids. Scientific studies have shown that a vitamin B1 deficiency causes a corresponding decline in the absorption rate of glucose in the alimentary canal. The following discussion focuses on the uses of vitamin B1 and health disorders caused by a deficiency of the same.

Uses of Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 serves various purposes in the body. Healthy functioning of the body cells is greatly enabled by vitamin B1 which is also fundamental in the proper functioning of nerves and the nervous system. Normal growth and development rests much upon adequate supplies of the vitamin in the body. In the digestive tract, vitamin B1 is instrumental in toning of intestinal muscles. The heart also derives much benefit in maintaining its muscle structure from a rich supply of the vitamin and it improves the flow of blood in the arteries. The presence of vitamin B1 in the body boosts anti oxidation and protects the body from the detrimental effects of toxic substances sometimes introduced through harmful habits such as smoking, overconsumption of alcohol and irresponsible drug usage.

Vitamin B1 occurs richly in lentils, beans, whole grains, wheat germ, lean meats, liver, heart, kidneys, eggs, poultry and fish.

Health Disorders Caused by Vitamin B1 Deficiency

Insufficient supply of vitamin B1 can cause poor appetite, resulting in disruption of digestion, constipation and weight loss. As thiamin has been established to play a key role in nervous health, its inadequacy can create fatigue of the nervous system, depression and insomnia. The health of the heart is also affected by an inadequate supply of vitamin B1 causing the muscles to become lethargic which can result in enlargement of parts of the heart, in itself a grave risk to health.

Alcoholics are typically afflicted by inadequate vitamin B1 as the overconsumption of alcohol interferes with the absorption of vitamin B1 by the body. Besides, alcohol damages the small intestine which reduces the absorption of nutrients.

Vitamin B1 deficiency has been a major problem in developing countries where it causes beriberi. Beriberi is classified into “wet” and “dry”. “Wet” occurs when people with vitamin B1 deficiency over-exert themselves with excessive amounts of carbohydrates. Cardiovascular health is affected which results in breathing difficulties, irregular heartbeats and even heart failure. “Dry” beriberi occurs in those who do not get adequate calories and are not active. This affects nervous health and cognitive processes including learning.

It has been suggested that sudden infant death (SID) may be caused by beriberi. Infantile beriberi may occur when mothers lacking in vitamin B1 breastfeed their babies. Sudden heart failure may arise.

Correcting thiamin deficiency would largely revolve around dietary management. Where intake from food is insufficient, nutritional supplements can be used so that carbohydrate metabolism is enabled unhindered. It should be noted that vitamin B1 can be lost during food preparation if food is subject to overcooking or extreme heat processing. Lifestyle management is also advisable such that detrimental practices like overconsumption of alcohol are kept away.
