There is a good side and bad side to many things. This is also true for the fats we consume. The good fats we welcome are omega-3 fatty acids, also known as alpha linolenic acid. Omega-6 fatty acids are also good fats which should be included in our daily diets

Antioxidants such as omega-3s and omega-6s play a role in preventing heart disease and some types of cancer

It is not difficult to replace your common bad fats with some good fats. Fish, olive oil, nuts, and seeds are all considered decent replacements

Flax seed, an omega-3 antioxidant, is believed to be an even better cancer fighter than soy

An important antioxidant, an omega-3 fatty acid called alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is found in several vegetable oils and few fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and more. Linoleic acid foods, a linoleic acid structure composing omega-6 fatty acids, consists of a larger variety of nuts and seeds, grains, fruits, vegetables, and more. Alpha linolenic acid has had many claims of being heart healthy. As antioxidants, alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid foods, are now being claimed to fight various cancers. Unlike certain fats which may promote cancer since they are saturated and boost hormones, alpha linolenic acids are considered to be good essential fats which will protect against cancer.

According to the chemical and physical structure of fatty acids, the linoleic acid structure and the alpha linolenic structure will determine the difference between an omega 3 fatty acid and an omega 6 fatty acid.

One of the greatest sources of omega-3 fats are lignans found in flax seeds. According to a 2002 study done at University of Toronto, lignans will reduce tumor growth rate and prevent metastasis by at least 45%. Flax seeds are a strong source of phytoestrogen, a cancer protecting nutrient. Flax seed is believed to be a stronger cancer fighter than that of soy products. Diets low in fat, but made up of good fats, have a tendency to decrease circulating testosterone and estrogen in the blood stream. Low fat diets will drop estrogen levels in the blood stream by fifteen to fifty percent within a few weeks. Since the hormones aid in promoting cancer, decreasing the circulation of them will reduce the risk of cancer. Not only are these fats believed to prevent some kinds of cancer, the omega 3 fatty acids are known to decrease risk of arrhythmias, lower triglyceride levels, slightly lower blood pressure, and decrease the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque which will block the arteries.

Because of the benefits and risks of good fats and bad fats, replacing the bad with the good should be considered. Adding monounsaturated fats to your diet would be a healthy choice. This would include adding olive oils, fish, nuts, fish oils, and flax. Sprinkling ground flax seeds on your morning cereal, or on your dinner salad will aid in reducing threatening hormones in the diet. This will also balance estrogen and testosterone levels as well. Omega 3s found in seeds, nuts, oils, and cold water fish should be included in your diet. People with low levels of omega 3 in the tissues and blood have been shown to correspond with some cancers including breast cancer.

Saturated and monounsaturated fats are not needed in our diets. These fats are made in the human body. However, linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acids are not self produced and can only be provided by diet. Recommended sources of these antioxidants are from soybeans, canola, walnuts, flaxseeds, and their oils. It is suggested that fish, especially fatty fish, should be eaten at least two times a week. Fatty types of fish include mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, salmon, and albacore tuna. If enough omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are not obtained by diet alone, linolenic acid supplements are also available for further protection against heart disease and various cancers.

Carnosine is also known as beta-alanyl-L-histidine or L-carnosine. It is a dipeptide of histidine and beta-alanine which are amino acids and is made naturally in the body. Carnosine can be found in very concentrated quantities in brain and muscle tissues. It is claimed to have strong anti aging properties and other benefits.

Carnosine can help to protect the body from the process of glycation. Glycation involves protein molecules binding to glucose molecules. This results in the formation of damaged structures which do not function. The result of glycation is that protein structure is altered and biological activity is decreased. Glycated proteins accumulate in tissue that has been affected and are reliable signs of disease. A variety of age-related conditions such as stiffening arteries and neurological and cataract impairment are attributable to glycation. Glycation, therefore is one of biggest causes of aging and breakdown in the body.

Research has shown that the processes of oxidation and glycation work together to form free radicals. Free radicals are known to damage cell proteins and genetic material and leave the cell vulnerable to cancer. Free radicals are also thought to be partly responsible for the aging process as well as a variety of illnesses and conditions. In other words, they are destructive oxygen atoms that can damage otherwise healthy cells. Oxidation occurs as a result of the use of oxygen in the body, while glycation is the result of the body’s use of sugar.

The process of glycation in the body attacks proteins and causes them to convert into Advanced Glycation End Products (known as AGEs). AGEs then accumulate in the body and generate more compounded free radicals. These free radicals then act within the body to break down tissues and that can result in damage to the eyes, skin, circulatory and nervous systems and vital organs. These symptoms can manifest themselves as mental decline, wrinkled skin and other conditions which are associated with aging.

Although a process has not been developed to reverse the effects of glycation, in studies carnosine has been shown decrease the rate of glycation in animals. In one piece of research carried out on rats, carnosine was shown to improve brain function, lifespan and physical appearance. Although such extensive research has not been carried out on human beings taking carnosine, early laboratory research has shown that carnosine can actually extend the life span of human cells.

Carnosine supplements have also been shown to reduce damage caused to cells by assisting the body to get rid of toxic metals. This process is known as chelation. High levels of pro-oxidative metals, such as zinc and copper and toxic heavy metals, such as mercury, lead and nickel have been identified as possible causes of a number of conditions including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and ADHD. Taking a carnosine supplement may help to protect against these illnesses, because it assists in stopping these potentially harmful metals from building up in your system.

There are no reported serious side effects in the use of carnosine in doses of 100-200 milligrams per day. Carnosine is available in pill form or topical form.

Quercetin is a phytochemical. Phytochemicals are derived from plants and many are being researched and studied for their health promoting properties. It is also known to be a flavonoid. Plants containing a number of different flavonoids have been used historically in traditional medicines in a variety of cultures; however flavonoids themselves were not discovered as a group until the 1930s. Flavonoids are best known for their antioxidant properties.

Quercetin is part of the coloring found in the skins red onions and apples. It is a common chemical pigment found in the barks and rinds of a wide variety of plants. It can be found in substantial quantities in different types of tea and red wines. It can also be found in green leafy vegetables (such as kale and broccoli), berries, and in herbs such as St. John’s Wort and ginkgo. It can also be isolated and produced in a form in which it can be sold as a dietary supplement.

Quercetin is known to be a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants scavenge damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. Free radicals are known to damage cell proteins and genetic material and leave the cell vulnerable to cancer. Free radicals are also thought to be partly responsible for the aging process as well as a variety of illnesses and conditions. Antioxidant enzymes can help neutralize free radicals, and in doing so may limit or stop some of the damage they cause. Quercetin also has an important vitamin C sparing function.

Quercetin is also a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine. It reduces both the release and manufacture of histamine as well as allergic and inflammatory mediators. Scientific research has shown that quercetin may also help to prevent cancer, particularly cancer of the prostate gland. Studies have shown that quercetin has anti tumor properties and that it may also act as a mast cell inhibitor which is useful in treating chronic prostatitis in men and interstitial cystitis in both men and women. An 8-year research project concluded that three flavonols (myricetin, kaempferol and quercetin) were responsible for reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer by 23 per cent.

Quercetin’s antihistamine properties may help to reduce asthma symptoms and allergic reactions. Its anti-inflammatory properties may assist in reducing pain from conditions such as arthritis. Men who are concerned with maintaining optimal prostate health could also benefit from quercetin. Quercetin is also thought to help decrease symptoms such as depression, anxiety and fatigue.

Quercetin may also be beneficial in assisting in the prevention of cataracts, heart disease, and respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.

Quercetin can be taken in greater dosages in dietary supplements. It is available on the market in tablet or capsule form in doses from 50 milligrams (mg) to 500 mg. At the moment, there is not a standard recommended dose for quercetin. When quercetin is consumed in the amounts contained within a healthy diet, it is unlikely to cause any health problems. In studies, there have been reports of nausea, but this only happened when high doses were administered.

If you’re interested in what quercetin has to offer, there are other supplements that supply the same benefits. Check out products like Vitamin E 400 I.U.
Super Fat Burner and ThyroZene will boost your metabolism to help you lose weight.

Garcitrin combines two active ingredients, namely hydroxycitric acid (known as “HCA”) and garcinol. On its own, HCA is poorly absorbed into target cells, and can be ineffective alone when acting as an inhibitor for adenosine triphosphate-citrate-lyase (known as “ATP”) which is a key enzyme in the formation of body fat. Garcinol acts to strengthen the biological effect of HCA and enhances the antioxidant effect of the compound.

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is an alpha-hydroxy tribasic acid. It has been recognized as a substance that can be effective in achieving weight loss since the 1970’s. The HCA isomer can be found in the rind of Garcinia cambogia, which is a type of Asian fruit. Studies have shown that the HCA isomer inhibits ATP. ATP facilitates the biosynthesis of fatty acids. The inhibition of citrate lyase by HCA may lead to the reduction of lipogenisis and subsequent fatty acids synthesis. The process of lipogenesis occurs when simple sugars (for example, glucose) are converted into fatty acids. These fatty acids are then esterified with glycerol and the triacylglycerols, that are packaged in VLDL and secreted from the liver, are then formed. VLDL cholesterol is considered to be a bad type of cholesterol because high levels have been shown to come with a greater risk of coronary artery disease.

The weight loss effects of garcitrin have been shown in scientific studies involving animals and people. Animals that were fed garcitrin lost weight due to a combination of reduced food intake, increased energy expenditure and decreased lipogenisis. During a 12 week trial on people, the group taking garcitrin showed a significant reduction in average body weight and body fat, whilst lean body mass increased compared to the group who were not given garcitrin. In addition, the group taking garcitrin experienced reduced appetite levels compared with the non- garcitrin group. No adverse side effects were shown or discovered in the study.

The studies also show that the combination of HCA and garcinol is more effective in achieving weight loss than HCA on its own. In addition to fat loss, garcitrin has also been shown to improve lean body mass. Improving or maintaining lean body mass while shedding excess fat is very important for overall health. In addition, lean body mass, or muscle, burns more calories than fat, and therefore a healthier ratio of lean body mass to fat will help maintain a healthy weight. Lean muscle burns calories even when it is not being used.

Garcitrin has also been shown to be an anti-oxidant, an anticarcinogen and anti microbial.

Garcitrin combines two very effective active ingredients to make it ideal for safe and natural weight loss. The compound of garcinol and HCA has been shown to reduce fatty acid and lipid synthesis. It therefore can improve lean body mass in a very efficient manner. The antioxidant activity and fortified HCA bioavailability mean that garcitrin is a very effective supplement to use in the management of body weight, weight loss and body composition.

Cococin is a substance which aims to capture the nutritional value of green coconut water in powder form for use as a dietary supplement and as a nutritious additive to some foods. Coconut water:

is proven to be a great detoxifier

is known to improve blood circulation

acts as an urinary antiseptic

can act as a natural diuretic

can be used in diarrhea treatment

Coconut water is rich in nutrients. It is the liquid endosperm of coconut. Endosperm consists of tissue that is produced in the seeds of many flowering plants. Its function is to surround the embryo around the time of fertilization and provide nutrients in the form of starch. Endosperm is also an important source of nutrients in the human diet as it can be abundant in proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, growth hormone and sugars all of which assist in hydration and growth of cells.

The nutritional properties and regenerative benefits of coconut water have been well known for some time. Coconut water is valued in the tropics as a refreshing and nutritious beverage. Studies have shown that coconut water can be used as a home glucose electrolyte oral rehydration drink in the early stages diarrhea. Coconut water also contains natural enzymes which support digestion and allow the body to get rid of toxic waste products.

Coconut water could also be used as an isotonic sports drink as it contains a number of important electrolytes including potassium, sodium, chloride and magnesium as well as sugars. It has a very similar level of electrolyte balance to the human blood stream.

Cococin is also used in topical preparations for moisturizing, and in order to assist with healthy cell growth. Coconut water is used in revitalizing compounds designed to care for hair, nails and skin. It is also said to support good blood circulation.

It can be taken as a supplement, but may also be found as an added ingredient in some foods and drinks, dairy products, snack foods, tea, coffee and soups. Cococin supplementation can have beneficial effects for people who want to raise their intake of nutrients, including magnesium and potassium.

Coconut water solids may support cellular growth. This means that it can be utilized in compounds which aim to support or increase the growth of human tissues, for example hair follicles. Cococin is prepared by freeze-drying the coconut water solids. The resultant powder can be blended into dry products, and it also easily dissolves in water. It can therefore be used as a nutritious addition to food or drink.

Some of the other medicinal benefits of coconut water are reported to be:

• Coconut water is very effective for rehydration.
• It contains organic compounds which promotes growth and repair.
• The present of albumin and saline make coconut water a good drink for anyone suffering from cholera.
• Coconut water can act as a diuretic (i.e. it tends to increase the flow of urine).
• Due to its electrolyte properties, coconut water can assist with the efficient absorption of drugs in the blood stream at peak absorption levels.
• Coconut water acts as a urinary antiseptic and helps the body to get rid of toxins in cases of mineral poisoning.

Alpha lipoic acid is an organic compound which can be found in a number of foods, including heart, kidney and liver meat, broccoli, brewer’s yeast, rice bran, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, peas and spinach. It is a fatty acid which naturally occurs inside each individual cell within the body. It is required by the body in order to produce energy to carry out all of the body’s normal functions. Alpha lipoic acid operates by converting glucose (or blood sugar) into energy.

Alpha lipoic acid also acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize potentially harmful chemicals called free radicals.

Alpha lipoic acid is remarkable because it functions in fat and water, unlike vitamins C and E which are more common antioxidants. Alpha lipoic acid also appears to have the ability to “recycle” antioxidants, for example glutathione and vitamin C after they have been used. Glutathione (known as “GSH”) is a tripeptide and an antioxidant. It acts to protect cells from toxins and free radicals. It is a very important antioxidant that has the beneficial effect of eliminating substances from the body that might be potentially harmful. It has been shown that alpha lipoic acid raises the production of glutathione in the body.

Alpha lipoic acid has been taken to treat peripheral neuropathy, which can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, injury, chemotherapy or by conditions such as Lyme disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, alcoholism, kidney failure, shingles and kidney failure. Symptoms can include burning, numbness, pain, tingling, itching and weakness. As alpha lipoic acid can operate as an antioxidant in fat as well as water, it can gain entry to all parts of the nerve cell, thereby protecting it from damage. Preliminary research suggests that alpha lipoic acid might help in treating peripheral neuropathy.

Alpha lipoic acid is able to cross the “blood-brain barrier”, which is a wall of structural cells and tiny vessels. It can therefore pass with ease into the brain. It is thought that it protects brain and nerve tissues by eliminating damage caused by free radicals.

Alpha lipoic acid has antioxidant properties which can neutralize the free radicals which can cause cell damage. Damage caused by free radicals is known to contribute to chronic illness and aging. It has been suggested that alpha lipoic acid could also be used to treat glaucoma, cataracts, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, burning mouth syndrome and stroke, although research into those uses are at an early stage.

Side effects of ingesting alpha lipoic acid might include a tingling sensation, headache, muscle cramps or skin rash. The safety of taking alpha lipoic acid by nursing or pregnant women and children is unknown.

Alpha lipoic acid is thought to improve blood sugar control, so people who have diabetes and are taking medication designed to lower blood sugar should consult their doctor before taking alpha lipoic acid.

If you’re looking for other natural antioxidants, check out products like Vitamin E 400 I.U. Pure which protects the circulatory system, promotes cholesterol metabolism and helps to maintain proper cholesterol levels.

Ginseng (American) Organic could help with overall health including cardiovascular and immune system health.

Of the numerous herbs that are currently on the market in the United States, ginseng is arguably the best known and most recognizable. Most people are still unsure, however, about the potential benefits of ginseng and whether or not they should incorporate it into their diet.

The Basics of Ginseng

The idea that benefits of ginseng exist is not some new age creation. Ancient Chinese legends say emperors from the country considered ginseng so beneficial to their health that it was added to their soaps, lotions, and foods. In fact, the genus name of the ginseng herb (both the Asian and American versions) is Panax, which comes from the Greek word meaning “universal remedy.” Another common belief is that ginseng roots shaped like a person’s body are the ones that will cause the longest life expectancy in the person who consumes it.

Ginseng has been harvested and sold for thousands of years. Its popularity stems from its proclaimed health benefits. In fact, the herb has been a major export for states such as Minnesota that dates back to the mid 19th century. In Asia, wild-growing ginseng found in Manchuria has been harvested for thousands of years.

What Can Ginseng Do?

Although the list of health benefits associated with ginseng could take up pages, some of these supposed benefits have more scientific merit than others. For example, there is good scientific evidence, according to the Mayo Clinic, that ginseng may benefit patients who have heart problems. Ginseng has also been shown to reduce blood sugar levels to reasonable levels for people who have type-2 diabetes. Research has also shown that ginseng can boost the effectiveness of antibiotics and flu vaccinations. No one is sure why this seems to be the case, and more research is needed to fully understand these benefits.

As far as the other numerous claims about ginseng and its health benefits, the verdict is still out. Research is being done but some of the results have been inconclusive. For example, more research is needed to determine if ginseng can actually help in the treatment of ADHD or if it can help patients going through chemotherapy to retain more of their weight and immune system capabilities. Other possible benefits of ginseng include lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, correcting erectile dysfunction, lowering the risk of cancer, and dozens of other health conditions.

Part of the reason for this problem is that many of the earliest research studies performed on ginseng’s benefits in these areas were not done properly or were not done with proper controls in place, which means that results could be questionable. Repeating the studies under better conditions to achieve more accurate results takes time, volunteers, and funding, hence the delay in developing conclusive evidence.

Taking Ginseng Safely

If you do decide to incorporate ginseng into your health routine, talk to your physician first. Some herbs can interfere with other medications and some can cause serious side-effects. Remember that just because something is natural does not mean it is always safe. Follow your physician’s advice on dosage and stop taking the herb if you begin to experience any negative reactions.

You might also want to keep track of any health benefits you experience after taking ginseng so that you may be able to contribute something to ongoing research.

If you’re interested in supplementing your diet with Ginseng, you can find it orally. Ginseng (American) Organic is a great natural supplement to work into your everyday regimen. It not only increases the body’s ability to destroy viruses and bacterias but it also increases overall energy levels and lowers cholesterol. Other natural supplements, like Blood Circulation Formula (BPE) and Curcumin W/ Bioperine, can give you the same cardiovascular benefits as Ginseng.

Do you know that conjugated linoleic acids:

have powerful antioxidant properties

can stop development of cancer cells

play a significant role in body fat reduction

can reverse the symptoms of diabetes

help to lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Conjugated linoleic acids (known as “CLA”) are a group of about 13 isomers (compounds with a different structural formula, but the same molecular formula) of linoleic acid. CLA cannot be produced in the human body, but it can be found particularly in dairy products and meat that is sourced from ruminants, for example cows, goats, bison, sheep, sheep, llamas and deer. The highest concentration of CLA may be found in kangaroo meat. Meats from ruminants which are grass fed (e.g. beef and mutton) tend to be good sources of CLA. They contain greater amounts of CLA than from meat sourced from grain fed animals (up to 500% more). Eggs are also a good source of CLA, and research has shown that eggs will retain their CLA even when heated to high temperatures, for example during frying.

It is claimed that CLA has anti cancer and antioxidant properties. Research carried out on rats and mice have shown that CLA may reduce growth of tumors in colon, skin and mammary tissues.

Some studies have found that CLA tends to reduce body fat in human diets, especially abdominal fat. It also reduces the glucose uptake of the whole body and increases serum lipid profiles. Further research has found that CLA may protect cells against oxidative damage. It does this by increasing levels of glutathione without initiating lipid peroxidation. Glutathione is an important antioxidant. Antioxidants are known to protect cells from free radicals and other toxins. Free radicals are known to damage cell proteins and genetic material and leave the cell vulnerable to cancer. They are also thought to be partly responsible for the aging process as well as a variety of illnesses and conditions. Antioxidants enzymes can help neutralize free radicals, and in doing so may limit or stop some of the damage they cause.

CLA is also said to have an antiatherogenic effects i.e. it protects against atherogenesis which is the formation of plaque (atheromas) in the arteries. It lowers LDL cholesterol and overall cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels. In experiments carried on animals, it also reduced atherosclerotic lesions (caused by a disease which affects arterial blood vessels) found in their aortas.

It has been found in experiments carried out on animals that CLA can improve select immune responses. At the same time, it can protect against immune induced cachexia (a loss of weight, fatigue, muscle atrophy, significant loss of appetite or weakness in someone who is not taking active steps to lose weight), also known as body wasting.

CLA intake may also have a beneficial effect on bone formation. Experimental animals given CLA had increased rates of bone formation. CLA does this by influencing bone metabolism factors.

In experiments carried out on animals genetically at risk from diabetes, it was shown that CLA can improve the utilization of glucose, and that it can also reverse the symptoms of diabetes.

Although there has been a great deal of research into CLA, a great deal more study (particularly involving human subjects) has to be done to fully understand its benefits and potential side effects.

They have also been used to help reduce the effects of the symptoms associated with respiratory conditions and allergies.

Citrus Bioflavonoids are sometimes treated as vitamins because they have similar properties and characteristics to a vitamin. In fact, they are sometimes known as vitamin P. They come in a variety of different forms including eriodictyl hesperidin, rutin and quercetin.

Citrus Bioflavanoids cannot be produced by the body. They therefore have to be ingested in the food we eat or as a dietary supplement. Good natural sources of bioflavonoids include the peel of citrus fruits, black currants and peppers. Also, cherries, apricots, grapes, grape fruit, oranges, lemons and prunes are good sources. Some herbs are also rich in naturally occurring bioflavonoids. They include elderberry, chervil, hawthorn berry, horsetail, shepherd’s purse and rose hips.

The use of Citrus Bioflavonoids on a daily basis can be helpful in alleviating spider veins, bruising, varicose veins, arthritis, phlebitis, hemorrhage, high cholesterol levels, cataracts, herpes, general inflammation, blood clots, bleeding gums, scurvy, edema, hemorrhoids, and hypertension. It has been found that taking vitamin C with bioflavonoids can be beneficial as it enhances the healing function of the two substances.

Quercetin is widely available in capsule form as an individual supplement in itself. It is well known for its antioxidant properties.

Rutin as a bioflavonoid is related to hesperidin and is a glucoside of quercetin. In fact, rutin contains around 50 per cent quercetin. Rutin is a pale yellow, solid substance which is slightly soluble in water. It forms the base of a whole group of bioflavonoids.

Rutin works in conjunction with vitamin C, and in doing so can and assist in reducing intraocular pressure and pain. It is a phenolic antioxidant, and it has been shown in research that rutin scavenges superoxide radicals. Rutin has the additional benefit in that it may help to maintain levels of glutathione, which is an important antioxidant.

Rutin has been shown to help to in maintaining a healthy circulatory system. It is especially useful for preventing bleeding caused by weakened blood vessels. It can also be used as a treatment for glaucoma, venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, hay fever, varicose veins, oral herpes, poor circulation, cirrhosis, stress, cataracts and low serum calcium.

Rutin commonly appears in vitamin C supplements as it boosts its effectiveness. It is commonly extracted from buckwheat. It is also a good source of vitamin C that is not acidic. Rutin is also used in topical ointments that can be used to stimulate blood circulation. It can also be used to decrease the fragility of capillaries in the extremities of the body.

There is a chance you might heard of resveratrol already. Then you might know that it:

is highly concentrated in red wine

has powerful antioxidant properties

is a natural enzyme that can help neutralize free radical damage

has been shown to stop development of cancer cells

Resveratrol is produced naturally by a number of plants when they are attacked by pathogens such as fungi or bacteria. It can be produced in a laboratory by a process of chemical synthesis, but can also be derived from Japanese knotweed. It is also found in the skin of red grapes, and in red wine. Red wine, which is produced through the process of fermenting grapes, is credited as having one of the highest levels of resveratrol of any food. Resveratrol is also found in peanuts and blueberries.

Resveratrol is has powerful antioxidant properties that can protect the body against environmental stresses. Antioxidants scavenge damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. Free radicals are known to damage cell proteins and genetic material and leave the cell vulnerable to cancer. Free radicals are also thought to be partly responsible for the aging process as well as a variety of illnesses and conditions. Antioxidants enzymes can help neutralize free radicals, and in doing so may limit or stop some of the damage they cause.

The study of the benefits of red wine, and subsequently its antioxidant properties and resveratrol began due to what is known as the “French Paradox”. That term came from a study that found that French people were less likely to die of a heart attack than American people, despite the fact that the Americans and French share similar high fat diets. The study concluded that the red wine consumed by the French served to protect them from heart disease. This study led to further research into the benefits of resveratrol.

Recent research has made the following findings:

* Resveritrol might increase life expectancy. In studies, increasing the resveratrol ingested in the diet of a number of animals increased their life span by up to 70%.
* Resveratrol may be beneficial in reducing deaths from obesity-related conditions. In a study carried out on mice, increased resveratrol intake meant that fat related deaths decreased by 31%. The mice that were fed with resveratrol also performed much better in agility and movement assessments than the mice that were not fed resveratrol.
* Resveratrol may have a beneficial effect on endurance. In research, mice given resveratrol had significantly more endurance when compared with mice that were not fed resveratrol. The mice with resveritrol were able to run twice as far in tests.
* Resveratrol can inhibit blood platelet aggregation. Blood platelet aggregation can result in blood clots which in turn can cause strokes or heart attacks.
* Resveratrol is a well known and powerful antioxidant. It can help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. Free radicals consist of unstable atoms and can be caused by sunlight, pollution, and by waste products produced during the body’s natural fat burning process. Free radicals have been identified as contributing factors in the development of cancer, brain degeneration and aging. Resveratrol has been shown to fight cancer in studies, during the initial stages, and through the promotion and progression phases of the disease.

Resveratrol is available as a dietary supplement, usually derived from either Japanese knotweed or dried grape skins and seeds.
