You can use a natural alcohol detox program, which includes alcohol detox at home, or you can enter into a facility that involves medical supervision and a clinical program for detoxification. After alcohol has been used frequently for a period of time, your body becomes used to the substance and you will suffer from alcohol detox symptoms. Alcohol detox at home is possible in most cases and is considered a form of natural alcohol detox, but caution must be used because at times some symptoms of the withdrawals may become life threatening.

The first step with an alcohol detox at home program is to check with your physician. There are some reasons why this may not be advisable for you, such as other medical conditions that you may have, extremely high tolerances due to drinking large quantities of alcohol every day, or other factors. Only your doctor can help you determine which method is best for your specific situation. If you and your physician decide an alcohol detox at home is appropriate, you may receive a prescription for a light sedative, like Valium or the equivalent, with a dose that slowly lowers until stopped. A multivitamin supplement can also be very helpful, and a nutritious diet including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins is important as well. Make sure you have a support system set up for the rough times during the detox process because this is invaluable and can help you succeed.

Moderate drinking can help promote heart health by increasing good HDL cholesterol levels, but keep that important keyword in mind – moderation

Excessive drinking, on the other hand, can have the opposite effect, increasing triglyceride levels, causing high blood pressure and even leading to the possibility of heart failure

Although having a drink can be a social occasion, alcohol is a drug and must be treated with respect. Excessive drinking is a route cause of many physical and mental illnesses and in extreme cases can cause death.

The majority of adults drink alcohol, but of course, not all people drink alcohol to excess. Alcoholism is a psychosocial disease that has many associated and complex issues. Although the actual causes of alcoholism are uncertain there are risk factors which can make a person more likely to drink to excess. Some of these risk factors can be controlled, and some we can have no control over. For example, you are at a greater risk of becoming an alcoholic if you have or had a parent who was an alcoholic.

How Alcohol Affects the Heart

There have been a number of scientific studies which have suggested that a moderate level alcohol consumption can actually help to protect against heart disease. It does so by raising HDL cholesterol (known as “good cholesterol”) and by reducing the amount of plaque accumulation in the arteries. It has also been found that alcohol can have a minor anti-coagulating effect, which keeps blood platelets from grouping together in order to form blood clots. Both of these processes can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, although the specifics of exactly how alcohol achieves these beneficial effects remains unclear.

Although there can be beneficial effects derived from drinking alcohol in moderation, drinking to excess can have a detrimental and even toxic effect on the heart. Excessive alcohol, especially if it is over a protracted period of time, can cause serious damage to the heart. It may also lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy (a weakened and enlarged heart), high blood pressure, stroke and congestive heart failure. Excessive drinking also tends to raise your triglyceride levels, which means that more fat circulates within the body.

Moderate drinking for one person may be excessive for another, and will depend on factors such as your weight, age, gender and state of health. Men and women metabolize alcohol differently. Put simply (and very approximately), one alcoholic drink in a woman will have the same effect as two alcoholic drinks in a man. Also, women metabolize alcohol more slowly, and it will therefore stay in a woman’s system longer. It is also true that as you get older, your body becomes less efficient at metabolizing alcohol.

Other Medical Consequences

Research has shown that alcoholics are at a greater risk during surgical procedures. Poorer outcomes in surgery may be due to the detrimental effect of alcohol on general health and well being. Alcohol also has a depressant effect and can lead to malnutrition which would also have an effect. Binge drinking, or the consumption of a large amount of alcohol infrequently, brings an associated risk of atrial fibrillation and this may also be a factor in surgical failure. Excessive alcohol also effects the ability of your body to stop bleeding. This is because if your liver has been damaged by alcohol, it may have difficulty in making the proteins that clot blood.

Excessive alcohol consumption has been shown to increase the risk of some cancers, including lung cancer, breast cancer and liver cancer. It also contributes to many other diseases and conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, pancreatitis, stomach ulcer, malnutrition and fetal alcohol syndrome. Long-term heavy excessive alcohol consumption may also destroy the brain cerebellum, which can lead to brain damage, slurred speech, unsteadiness and slowed thinking.

If you think you or someone close to you may drink excessively, there are many organizations and voluntary groups that can help. Talk to your doctor and get help.

Breaking old habits can be very hard. Habit forming can creep up on you, and before you know it, you can be dependent on something. Whether it is over eating or alcohol, these elements can enter your life so that they become woven in to the fabric of your day. Indulgence turns into dependency, and ultimately your health may begin to suffer. Here are some simple first steps to take to break the habits of alcohol and overeating.

How to Stop Drinking Alcohol

You could take your first steps toward stopping drinking today. First of all, you need not tackle giving up alcohol on your own. Depending on the amount of alcohol you drink, you may want to see your doctor first, as he will be an excellent source of information, and a gateway to further resources that might help you. For example, he will have details of local alcohol support groups.

While many people need psychological and moral support to stop drinking, others may need medical assistance with the physical side of dealing with alcohol addiction. If you feel you might be addicted to alcohol, see your doctor, and he will be able to tell you whether you need medical supervision and/or medication. Your doctor may give you a prescription that will help you along the way to safely giving up alcohol. Later, he may also give you some medication to help you stay sober.

The benefits of stopping excessive drinking can be huge. Better health, less risk of liver damage, fewer psychological difficulties to name but a few. Alcohol addiction can have a profound effect on your body, and so can withdrawal. If you have a problem with alcohol, recognize it and then see your doctor. With the help of your doctor, you are far more likely to succeed and stopping drinking will be safer.

How to Stop Overeating

Overeating may not sound as serious as alcohol abuse, but it can be every bit as serious as any habit, with very serious health consequences. Here are some simple tips to combat over eating.

Eat more often: rather than having 3 large meals per day, aim to have 4-6 small meals. Eating more often will leave you less prone to snack cravings between meals, and if you make the right choices, it will help you boost your metabolism, allowing you to burn fat more easily. That doesn’t mean you can eat anything you want, though!

Make smart food choices: Plan your meals, and pick good, wholesome foods. Foods that are unprocessed are more difficult for your body to break down, giving you a more sustained release of energy, rather than an unhealthy blood sugar spike you tend to get with processed, sugary and fatty foods. Construct a meal around a good, lean source of protein (about the size of a pack of cards), a source of complex carbohydrate (e.g. whole wheat pasta or wholegrain rice) of around the same portion size and plenty of fresh, steamed vegetables.

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/how-to-stop-drinking-alcohol2.jpg" alt="Stop Overeating" title="Stop Overeating" / >Recognize your vulnerable moments: overeating can be very routine-oriented. Snacking at a particular time of day, or when something happens can be a very difficult habit to break. If this is the case, try to stay active at these times to avoid thinking about food. Exercise can be an excellent way of staying occupied. If you feel you have a deep psychological need to overeat, don’t be afraid to get help, and see your doctor.

Every journey starts with a first step, and recognizing you have a problem, is a very important one. Take positive steps to address your issues, and remember that help is out there if you need it.

Smoking causes damage the lungs.

Diseases associated with smoking are cancer, asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.)

By now, even heavy smokers know that their addiction to cigarettes is causing serious damage to their lungs. While we’ve heard the claim thousands of times, most of us don’t really understand specifically how smoking leads to damage in parts of the lungs. Below is an overview of the many ways in which smoking damages your lungs and leads to other health problems.

Types of Damage

Most of us know that cigarettes are full of additives but learning that they contain as many as 4,000 different chemicals can be shocking. According to a PBS special for kids, cigarettes can contain cyanide, formaldehyde, ammonia, lead, and all types of other nasty ingredients that should never be in our bodies. Their presence is the number one reason why smoking damages your lungs.

Take tar, for example. Tar is added to cigarettes so they will have a better flavor. However, tar is sticky and once inhaled through the cigarette it sticks to the insides of our lungs. Carbon monoxide is also present in the smoke produced by burning cigarettes. When carbon monoxide is in our bodies, it enters our bloodstream and prevents red blood cells from carrying oxygen to the parts of our bodies that need it. As a result, we sometimes do not get sufficient oxygen supplies leading to health problems.

One of the most serious affects of these chemicals is they paralyze the cilia, which are the hairs lining the upper airways. Normally, the cilia and mucus work together to prevent infections from reaching your respiratory system. The mucus captures the bacteria, viruses, or other foreign invaders while the movement of the cilia pushes them away from the lungs. Smoking prevents the cilia from doing their job so much of that bad stuff ends up right in your lungs. This is the main reason why smokers are more likely to have respiratory infections.

Additionally smoking can damage the alveoli (air sacs in the lungs) and can cause the narrowing of air passageways. Both make breathing more difficult for smokers.

Diseases Associated with Smoking

Because of the ways smoking damages your lungs, as a smoker you would be at great risk of developing certain types of diseases: COPD, cancer, and asthma. COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and occurs when smoking (as well as other factors in smaller numbers of people) makes breathing more difficult. As the disease worsens, you may find yourself being short of breath after doing very little or nothing at all. COPD is a leading cause of death among smokers and can begin interfering with your quality of life at a younger age.

Since 1995, scientists have known without a doubt that smoking causes lung cancer. First, they identified an important gene known as p53 which played a protective role in the health of the cells. Second, they discovered that the carcinogens in the cigarette damaged the p53, leading to future mutations, and eventually the excessive cell growth that is the hallmark of all types of cancer.

Asthma is also connected to smoking but in a different way. While asthma is not caused by smoking, it can be triggered by the inhalation of secondhand or even firsthand smoke because the chemicals irritate the lungs leading to the narrowing of air passages and difficulty breathing.

By now, everyone knows that cigarette smoking is one of the worst activities there are for health. Cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis are just a few of many health problems associated with smoking. There is also a proven effect on cholesterol. Smoking cigarettes increases the body’s cholesterol level which leads to heart disease and stroke. It is extremely important to monitor your cholesterol. Smoking kills more people every year than any other disease or accidents. There are many reasons for quitting smoking, lowering your cholesterol level will help to reduce your risk of heart attack and other heart diseases.

If you have high cholesterol, smoking can be a leading contributor. High cholesterol smoking can be deadly if something is not done about it as soon as possible high cholesterol smoking can cause not only you but your family as well an altered lifestyle at best, at worst your death.

Stopping smoking is not an easy thing to do. There are however, numerous aids available to help you with the task. Your doctor can make several suggestions that will help you stop smoking; anything from prescription medications to over the counter assistance may be used. If you find that you fail over and over again you can’t give up. It takes most people several attempts before they are able to permanently kick the habit. Don’t ever give up; even a short time off of cigarettes will reduce the risk of heart disease.

The smoking effect on cholesterol is huge and the importance of lowering your cholesterol cannot be exaggerated as it plays an important role in preventing heart disease. Among many other things high cholesterol raises blood pressure which causes extra strain on your heart, making it work harder. Lowering your cholesterol reduces this pressure on your heart, allowing it to work at a more normal level of exertion. High cholesterol prevention and lowering your cholesterol will also prevent your arteries from constricting. Smoking causes your blood vessels to dilate which makes them more susceptible to the buildup of plaque which build over time working to block the blood supply available to your heart. This process leads to arterial sclerosis. Once the vessels to the heart become blocked it is inevitable that you will have a heart attack. A heart attack can be sudden and happen so fast that you may not be able to be saved and if you are the lack of blood flow to your brain can leave you with permanent brain damage.

Smoking effects cholesterol and high cholesterol leads to heart disease and greatly increases your risk of heart attack or stroke. Even if smoking has been a lifelong habit that is difficult to break, it is not worth jeopardizing your life and health. If your life is not important to you, you can be rest assured that it matters to your family. Not only can it cause them to have to take care of you. It may cause them to mourn your death. The next time you light up remember that every cigarette is working to damage your heart.

It works to increase “good” cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol) but is also responsible for most cases of heart disease

Moderation is one or two drinks per day

The relationship between alcohol and high cholesterol is an important consideration to take in to account when treating and preventing heart disease and high blood pressure. The good news is that alcohol can actually have a positive effect on cholesterol levels if used in moderation. The key to this is moderation and what exactly does moderation mean when talking about alcohol consumption. While there can be a positive relationship between alcohol and cholesterol caution should be used and alcohol should not be considered a cure for high cholesterol.

Studies have shown that there is a direct link between alcohol and high cholesterol. What most people would not guess is that the link between alcohol and cholesterol can actually be a beneficial one if the alcohol is used responsibly. Alcohol actually works to increase good cholesterol while at the same time not having an effect of bad cholesterol. It is widely known that high cholesterol levels are responsible for most cases of heart disease and the medical community is working very hard to educate the public against the dangers of high cholesterol. There are many diets out there now that are designed to help the individual lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol numbers. One of the elements of a diet can be alcohol if used responsibly and in moderation.

Most experts agree that the definition for moderation is one or two drinks per day. This is obviously a guideline and not an across the board rule. There are many factors that go in to what amount is the right amount for an individual. Women, who are typically lighter and have less muscle mass than men cannot tolerate the same amount of alcohol as most men. Alcohol and high cholesterol are related and in a beneficial way.

The obvious danger inherent in the use of alcohol is the many adverse effects of alcohol and whether the benefit received from alcohol is great enough to offset the dangers involved with alcohol. After all, what good is low cholesterol for the alcoholic? Alcohol also has dangerous interactions with many medications and can make some medicines ineffective. Alcohol is known to cause cirrhosis of the liver which in many cases caused premature death. Alcohol and metabolism of alcohol is very difficult for the liver to handle. Once the liver absorbs as much alcohol as it can, any additional alcohol destroys liver cells.

Alcohol and metabolism are also important relationships to take in to consideration by both individuals and health professionals. Alcohol has many effects on medications. With this in mind, if a person already has high cholesterol and is taking medication to control his or her cholesterol levels and even though alcohol consumption is beneficial to cholesterol levels it may also at the same time make the patients cholesterol medication ineffective, resulting in an actual gain in cholesterol numbers.

Alcohol and cholesterol have a tenuous cause and effect interaction and if used with caution the use of alcohol can make a small difference. The effects of alcohol and metabolism however may render any benefits of alcohol use negligible.
